refrigerator question

Hi folks,

I have what might be called an old style refrigerator in my kitchen. I call it old style because it has only one door and the “freezer compartment” is at the top hanging there above the main body of the fridge and not as a separate compartment. It has its own plastic door.

Recently this door came off, impossible to get a replacement apparatus for it, so I was wondering if the fridge is still ok to use. Freezing is not the object as I have a separate freezer. But is this type of fridge made to have the door on that compartment or is it ok if i’m not using it for freezing anything to have it off.

I hope I explained the layout well enough.

thanks, b.

Yup. No problem. the only difference is that the freezer temperature may be a bit higher. That’s all.

Another problem is that you will have excessive frost buildup in the freezer compartment. Now, every time that you open the fridge door, wet outside air will come in, and most of this humidity will condense on the coolest spot (in the freezer compartment) and there form ice.

Gradually the freezer compartment will fill up with ice, but I don’t think it’s a life threatening scenario. If you really don’t want to use the freezer compartment it would be better to cover it up with some old plastic bags and duct tape. Proper engineering!

Yes, but do it right. Replace the door with a cheap sheet of Plexiglass. Make a diorama!

I did that once with 1/2" lucite, porcelin and brass fittings. It looked like a little shrine to frozen peas !
