You know, I really don’t think they’re being catty. I am not pleased with the way that the OP has categorized everyone who happened to go to that concert. Calling someone white trash when you have no idea what their life is like, what their circumstances are? That’s not right. These people could be the fortune 500, and dressed down for the night to relive their youth. Is it wrong to want to reminisce?

Sorry, but some of the self-rightousness on this board irritates the hell out of me. The day I meet someone who has never once in their life made the slightest judgement about someone else based soley on their appearence (as they have nothing but the persons appearence to go on initially) EVER, then they can talk. Until then, quit lecturing people about it, ESPECIALLY when it’s being done in good humor.

Okay I can appreciate that as I have a local bar I enjoy going to where a majority of them are bikers, however, not all of them are bikers. There are people like me that enjoy wearing khakis but still enjoy the same music. But by comparison, I don’t call it so much a biker bar as I call it a rock-n-roll bar.
Surely I have made it out to be a biker bar but I have never said it was a white trash bar. White trash to me means something completely different than the OP.
I also don’t claim to bunch people into one “classification” however I do try my best to not put people into classes, although people do that to me because of my family. Little do they know I was NOT the cheerleader (although I was accepted to the Pom Pom group before my mother died and I had to switch schools when I lived with my dad.) Little do people know about you and your life and to blatently say some of the things that the OP said, it’s most likely that someone will take offense.
So, if you put it out there, know there will be at least one person that will take issue with it. If you don’t know that have been a member here for as long as some have, then you have no excuses.
I hate mini-van driving people, I hate them all. Even the good mini-van drivers because of the others that can’t seem to keep an eye on the roads. Most of them are too busy yelling at kids in the car while talking on the cell phone with their spouses. I am making a generalization here, just as the OP did. I avoid driving around mini-vans as much as possible and I can guarantee you, if I see a mini-van, I am white knuckled…this doesn’t make it right but it’s my experience but that doesn’t mean that it’s right for me to assume that all mini-van drivers suck…does it?

Honestly, again, damnit, if you classify a group of people on the SDMB you are open to all kinds of criticism (sp) right or wrong. It’s about choosing your battles rather than thinking everyone will embrace your complaint in the BBQ Pit. More often than not, people will find problems with your post than they will hug you and tell you that everything is okay.
I personally thought the OP was funny but I can also see the sides of those that felt it was lame. I am odd that way, which actually kinda sucks. The posts that followed by the OP though were just lame. Deal with it. You put it out there, you might expect some negatives replies. Such is life.

I think an important point you’re missing here is that the OP wasn’t saying that she hated any one group of people. She was there with them, partying with them. So right there, your minivan analogy kinda falls apart.
And no, not everyone there was WT. She was there, after all, and she doesn’t consider herself to be WT. She made a blanket statement to help “set up the scene” for a humorous story. No need to call in the PC police quite yet.
Like I said before, I was reacting more to Ultress’s comments, which seemed over the top to me. There seemed to bit a bit more behind them than offense taken on behalf of those who might possibly be in attendance at a particular concert and not be part of a particular group.
Just like one has to be prepared to deal with someone taking offense at something they posted, one also must be prepared to recieve backlash for their post. Whether it’s the person who originally committed the “offense” or the person who was “offended.”

The Pit is a funny damn place, really. It can breed all kinds of relationships. From the most violent online relationships to the most cuddly ones. I don’t look for either but it can also create people with non-common interests to do a high five and get on with life.

Other than a little bit of inconsistancy with the whole “sometimes it’s best to keep your opinion to yourself” immediately followed by “if I disagree with something you say I’m going to say something and I expect the same from you” all is good.

In case you missed it, and the more you say, I am pretty sure you did - it was BBJ’s hateful generalization regarding a mass of people. It was rude and unnessasary in creating her story.
