I saw a little of the Regis & Kelly Show last week. Regis at one point was pestering the shows producer, Gellman and it reminded me of a night 30 something years ago. At that time, Regis was Joey Bishops sidekick and generally the brunt of Joey’s jokes. This one evening as I recall, after a rib by Joey, a tearful and emotionally disturbed Regis, lashed out at Joey, threw a Hissy-Fit and walked off the stage. At that time, nobody really cared and it hasn’t seemed to effect Phiban’s career. The eastcoast phiban always seemed uncomfortable on the westcoast. I find it ironic that Phiban would perpetuate the ridiculing of Gellman, in-light of his own personnal history.
I remember Joey Bishop as the comedy sidekick to Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and the other “cool guy” members of the Rat Pack. That would make Philbin the sidekick to a sidekick. Sinatra, Martin and the others are dead and gone; Philbin has his own show. This validates, in some way, the idea that cockroaches would rule world following a nuclear war.
I never liked Regis that much. Knowing that he got ribbed into a meltdown makes me feel warmer and cozier.
What are the odds that this thing exists in a vault somewhere?
There was one well-doumented instance where Joey’s guest Debbie Reybnolds, demonstrating on how to handle a person whose clothes were on fire (???), grabbed Philben, hurled him to the floor and rolled him. Philbin was somewhat shaken up by the deomonstration.
I don’t remember an incident where Philbin walked off because Bishop made fun of him – but no one actually remembers very much at all about the Joey Bishop show.
Which is why I suspect,GLWasteful , that any archival evidence was erased a long time ago.
I have to beleive all the Joey Bishop Show episodes are archived. These type of shows, Dean Martin, Laugh-in are all being made available on DVD.
I would also have to beleive that Regis has the clout (and money) to have that show edited or made not available to the public. I’m sure he looks back with regret to that evening. Ed Mcmahon, took alot more abuse from Johnny Carson, however, with Ed’s affable charm,he could role with the punches.
The Steve Allen show was much more demanding and had a revolving door of sidekicks. Pat Harrington, was probably Steverino’s best.
I don’t know. Carson Productions (which owns the Johnny Carson-era Tonight Show) has repeatedly said they’d love to release highlight tapes from the 1960s, but NBC erased the masters decades ago. Given that the Joey Bishop Show was not ABC’s finest moment, I doubt they cared to pay for the cost of warehousing.
Even if some relative of Joey Bishop were to unearth a box of tapes in the back of the garage, who knows whether any particular episode would still exist.
On the other hand, just this past weekend I saw dvd’s of the orginal Joey Bishop sitcom – an emminently forgettable chapter of TV history – so I guess nothing’s impossible.
Damnation!
You’d be surprised what doesn’t exist.
TWO networks (CBS and NBC) covered the first Super Bowl.
Neither network has a complete copy of the game left.
