As a former Mormon and a liberal, I think the OP is way off, especially since the lowest thing which Reid has said about Romney was Reid’s claim about Romney not paying taxes. That, of course pales compared to comments that Obama “pals around with terrorists.”
If you read the original OP/Ed by Prince, it was not out of line. Reid was clearly referring to Prince’s comments.
This whole OP is just a tempest in a tea pot. Or not, since it’s about Mormons.
I see you’ve downgraded Reid’s statement from “attack” to “comment.” Have you come to the conclusion that his statements weren’t so extreme or offensive or out of bounds?
Reid’s just jealous that he is one step further removed from being the perceived “public face of Mormonism”. And he is in an uncomfortable position of being a liberal in a religion that is overwhelmingly conservative.
A few years ago, Prop 8 was the public face of Mormonism. That face wasn’t popular, so now they’ve got the “and I’m a Mormon” ad campaign attempting to make bikers, rock stars, working women, and a disproportionate number of black people into the public face of Mormonism.* My name is Willard, I made a billion dollars by helping companies to downsize, my dancing horse is tax-deductible, and I’m a Mormon* isn’t the image they’re looking for.
