Relax, it's only dirt - what are *your* household standards?

[ol][li]Change your undershirt – I’m female, I change bras and underwear daily if not twice daily (evening wear) but to even the score, I will wear the same nightgown for 3-4 nights. Other items of clothing - especially jeans, sweaters or anything that requires special handling or dry cleaning – may get worn repeatedly between washings, depending on how long I’ve worn them, if they have any visible dirt or stains, how they smell (in critical areas, good call Maastricht!) and how “fresh” they appear.[/li][li]Change your bottom bedlinen? – By this I’m presuming fitted sheet, that’d be twice a week, along with the top sheet and pillowcases. Pillows get washed every other week or so. (Both Mr. TeaElle and I have allergies, and that helps significantly.) I also spray the sheets with a lavender spray every night before bed. It helps me get to sleep. (It’s a relaxing scent.) Washcloths and bath towels can get three uses, hand towels get changed every other day because we wash our hands a lot. (Two kids in diapers.)[/li]Clean your cat’s litterbox? – No cats, but I have a dog. His food and water bowls are washed daily, he’s washed weekly unless he gets muddy in which case he’s washed immediately. When it’s rainy or wet, his paws and belly (he’s built low to the ground) are cleaned with a warm, wet cloth whenever he comes inside from a walk or trip to the yard. His area of the yard is picked up every other day or so, and we have a special doggie waste system in the yard. (Solid waste goes into a small container that’s sunken into the yard, then covered with an enzyme which breaks it down over time.)[/ol]

Change your undershirt? Please add if you’re male/female, live in a hot/cold climate, and do physical or sedentary work.
I change my bra as often as needed. In the summer, it’s every day or every other day. If I get sweaty, it goes straight into the clothes hamper. I live in northern Florida, so the weather changes quite a bit. I’m also a pedestrian and a student, so I do a lot of walking about and physical work.
Change your bottom bedlinen?
I change my fitted sheet somewhere between a couple of weeks and every month. It really depends upon wear (I sleep over at my boyfriend’s house a lot), whether I’ve been sick, or whether my menstruation has been horrendous or not. The duvet cover gets washed just as often. Since I tend to be the reminder for my boyfriend to do his laundry (he’s got a lot of clothes and forgets until he’s not got a lot left to wear), I make sure he washes his bed linens (including comforter-- he’s got a dog that LOVES to sleep in the bed) at least once a month, if not every other week.
Clean your cat’s litterbox?
I don’t have a cat, but I do have a guinea pig. She gets combed every day (she’s long haired), and I change her bedding about once a week. I’ve stopped bothering to spot clean because I always end up missing stuff, so I just do an extra thorough cleaning of the bottom box of the cage when I change her bedding. She gets washed probably about every other week, and blow dried. Now, if I had a cat, I’d clean their box every other day or every day, depending upon how crazy my schedule was.

Let’s see, I’m female and I live in Texas.

I wear the same work bra two days in a row. I exercise almost everyday and always wear a jog bra for that so I go through a gazillion bras a week.

I do sheets every three or four weeks. I think how often you change the sheets also depends on if you sleep with a partner (and what you do with that partner). I sleep alone. I do wash my pillowcase and under pillowcase every week witht he regular laundry.

I change the litterbox everyday usually. And I walk the litter directly to the outside ltrashcan.

I usualy do towels weekly.

Yeah, cleaning standards do vary a lot. In the thread the OP is talking about, we talked about all these really disgusting houses and then a poster comes in saying how nasty his neighbor is because she only uses towels for a whole week. The horror…

Also female in Texas
Underclothes - daily (in the heat of the summer sometimes twice if we’ve been to a swim meet or other outdoor event)
Sheets - weekly
Blankets - three or four times a year with regular airing
No cats, but we have a dog, we vaccuum weekly with spot checks if we are expecting guests.

I grew up allotted two towels per week. But my husband is a one use only towel person. Drove me nuts when we were young. He finally started helping with the laundry and replacing the towels more often so it doesn’t bug me as much and I find I reuse the hair towel after hanging to dry, but I’m just as likely as he these days to use the body towel to clean up or dry up the bathroom after I am dry and then toss it to the laundry.

all clothing skin out daily, more frequently if i am sweating like a pig, or am planning on going out in the evening.

bedlinens, 2x week, wash the duvet cover weekly

litterbox daily scoop weekly change

Well, obviously I’m a pig, compared to many of the posters in this thread. I really hope the population is skewed and the more “relaxed” cleaners are reluctant to post
Still, I’m very clean about some things. For instance, I change the covers of the pillows on my couch every week. Strangers who sat on my couch touched them, I took naps on them, the cat lied on them…I farnkly think its odd that many people never wash their couch-cushions. I’d like to wash the covers on my couch, too, but I suspect I’d never get them to fit anymore.

I also clean the doorhandles and the lightswitch on the toilet, meticulously, whenever I clean my toilet. I’ve read that there are more bacteria on those then on the toiletseat itself.

And I clean my keyboard at work every three months. I bring a few cotton-balls and a bottle of alcohol and scrub the keys. That accumulated grime on some keyboards is just…yucky. Think a *brown * “Enter”-key with a small clean spot in the middle…). Some people just don’t seem to realise you CAN clean those.

TeaElle, yes, I clean my cat’s food dish every day too, along with the rest of the dishes. It’s a porcelain dish, there has been meat on it…of course I wash it every day. I get the impression many people don’t. But then again, some people think I’m yucky for washing the cat’s dish in the same water and with the same dishbrush as my own plates and mugs. ::shrugs:: I even use my own forks to put the cat food on the dish, (and then wash them along with the other used forks and spoons) and that grosses some people out, too.

Underwear gets changed daily, bras are good for two days. I don’t sleep in them, so they do sort get “aired out.” In the summer, if I sweat a lot, I will change it daily.

The sheets (top and bottom) get changed every week.

The litter box gets usually scooped out every day, though I will admit to sometimes skipping a day here and there. It gets completely dumped and washed and all new litter put in every couple of weeks.
The dog poop in the yard gets picked up every couple of days.

I also wash the pet’s food bowls every couple of days. The dog slobbers when she eats and the food bowl gets disgustingly slimey. The water bowls get pet hair and little bits of food in them, so they always get well-rinsed and refilled every day. My huband just refills the water bowls with a glass from the cabinet; I pick them up and rinse and refill them from the faucet.

I do the same thing, wash the sheets (on Saturday, though) and put the same ones back on, and yeah, they are getting a bit faded, but still my favorite.

I change my bra daily, I usually have oily skin by the end of the day, so it’s a must for me. Other women in my family go a few days, and seem fine, but they got the non-oily genes or something, heh.

We don’t have a cat, N/A.

A clean bra every day (same with panties and socks!). Jackets/sweaters/coats/sneakers get washed as needed (usually once a week with my son’s jackets, and once every two weeks for his sneakers).

Sheets get changed every Friday night (or most usually Saturday morning). Blankets get washed about once a month.

No kitty litter box (ugh).

When I worked in the community, we’d have special events, where the participants would frequently “dress up” for the event. They’d get their hair done, nails painted, pantyhose on with a nice, fancy outfit–then they’d wear their coats which hadn’t been washed all winter and absolutely REEKED. It made me gag.

I only have three “good” bras (in my size, the good ones are at least $60) and I need to wear a bra at night, so I wear a good bra during the day, swap it for a nasty cheap bra to wear to bed, and wear whichever “good” bras works with my outfit the next day. So usually it’s changed each day, but if I need that seamless one two or even three days in a row, it’s going to be two or three days.

Bedsheets, I wash only once a month unless we’re sick. If someone’s sick, every morning. It really does seem to help us get better quicker. I don’t know if it’s a bacterial thing or (more likely) a physchological thing, but fresh sheets are soooo nice when you’re feeling icky.

Cat litter: we have an automatic litter box, and it’s the best money I’ve ever spent. I love it, love it, love it. It’s a little tempermental, and it took us some time to work out how much litter it can hold (not as much as feels right), but people are shocked to find out we have cats, because there is NO odor in our tiny, tiny apartment. So the litter gets scooped 10 minutes after the cat’s been in the box, every time. With two cats, the little waste receptacle fills up about twice a week, so it gets emptied when full.

I can not believe how most everyone changes bras daily/every few days!Mine last at least a week. I only have four good ones and a spare acceptable one. Only thing I can say in my defense is that it is far from warm here in Ireland. And that no one has every complained.

Bedsheets go for too long. My ideal is once a fortnight, but it ends up being a bit longer very often.

No pets, though. That helps a bit. Phew. And I am really quite good about keeping the kitchen clean.

I noticed some women go to bed with a bra on. This sounds more uncomfortable than not wearing one (I’m a guy, some I’m kind of clueless about this. But I also wear as little as possible when I go to bed, and wouldn’t be able to stand the sensation of something wrapped snugly around my torso :o )

I wear 2 undershirts most days. One for my crossing guard job, where I am standing outside in the afternoon. Its not a terribly active job, but if I’m working at a corner where there is no shade, and its a sunny day, I do get pretty sweaty. The undershirt helps keep my work shirts fresh. Before I go to my other job, I stop at home (both jobs are close to my house) and change shirts, putting on a fresh undershirt. This is an effort to curb BO factor- I do wear deodorant all the time, but just the same I can start smelling funky if the weather is hot. I don’t wear sweaty clothes if I can avoid it, so as soon as I get home, that sweaty undershirt goes right in the hamper. Underwear gets changed once/twice a day- like I’ve said before, I’m a sweaty guy, and the underwear tend to absorb a lot of groin sweat which gets uncomfortable.

I change my bottom bedlinen probably every 2 weeks or so- I don’t really have a ritual so its pretty sporadic unless it has some obvious funk going on. However when I am sick I am very dilligent about washing my sheets/linens/etc in an effort to avoid re-infecting myself.

The cat’s litterbox is automated, combined with the cat preferring to piddle in the backyard closer to nature, means the receptacle doesn’t fill that quickly, but I change it every time I notice it start to pile up.

My job’s about as sedentary as they get, and I live in a hot climate.

My sheets get changed every week by the cleaning lady. Before we had a cleaning lady, we went at least 3 weeks without changing them.

I don’t wear an undershirt, unless it’s really cold (the insulation in Houston homes is terrible, so in the winter I get colder inside than I ever did when I lived in the north). When I wear them, I change them every day.

No pets.

I, too, am curious and clueless as to why some women wear bras at night. Could WhyNot or someone explain? My wife goes braless at least half the time at home, so she wouldn’t be much help.

For me, it’s 'cause they’re big and I hurt if I don’t. Specifically, my pecs (minor and major), seratus and even a good portion of my rotator cuff for some reason, will be achy and sore all day. I do a good bit of lifting, I have decent upper body strength, but the weight of my large boobs sliding around at night is more than my musculature can handle.

Also 'cause in the summer, sweat pools up and prickly heat and even skin yeast infections can happen really fast. Eeew.

I think I’m gonna come up as the grossest person here…

Undershirts? Don’t wear 'em. When I do, I actually get hot enough to sweat MORE than the undershirt can handle. If Idon’t wear one, there’s actually less chance of getting sweat on my nice shirts. Only if I know I’m gonna be in a cold place do I wear them. And in that case I’ll wear one probably twice, since if it’s cold I’m not gonna be sweating all that much.

Sheets? Well…um…I have washed my sheets once since I moved to my new apartment…I have been here since July 27…the washing probably was in the middle, so I think it’s time for another one. I live alone, no one visits me or sleeps in my bed, so what do I care if it’s gross? I don’t care. I shower every morning, so anything nasty on me goes down the drain.

Litter box? No cat. If I can help it, will never have one (a litter box, that is.) While not a big fan of cats, if an SO wanted one I’d say OK, but only if we lived in an area where the cat could be an outdoors cat.

Towels? I have two towels I use, pretty much. Each is used for a week, then tossed on the floor. I know it’s time to do laundry when I have no clean towels.

Oh, and kelly5078, I have had a couple girlfriends who wore bras at night because they were well endowed. To not wear one was sometimes more uncomfortable than wearing one. But I can’t speak for any of the other woman who do it, that’s just one reason why they might.

Dont’ wear any kind of under shirt. Don’t wear any kind of under pants.

I wash the sheets about every two weeks.

Have always considered a box of cat crap in the house to be disgusting.

What’s an “undershirt”? Like a wife-beater? (Shoot, did I really just say that? :smack: ) I never understood the reason for those things. Wouldn’t another layer just make you hotter (temperature-wise, not more attractive)?

Sheets: probably once every two weeks, or more often if deemed necessary on a case-by-case basis.

Catbox. Don’t have one yet but there are two dogs crapping in the front yard, and I pick that up very infrequently. They generally do their business when they’re on walks, etc. (“Don’t shit where you eat.” They’re smart like that.)

  1. t-shirt Every 2 days (I only wear loose fitting collar-neck t-shirts), Undies and socks every day. Male. Sedentary work.

  2. Not prepared to say (although I bought new bed stuff a few days ago)

  3. No cat.

I used to think this too but a cotton undershirt breathes pretty well, and if its a hot day I’m going to be sweaty whether I’m wearing one shirt or two, the only difference is if I’m wearing only my uniform shirt I’m going to be sweating directly into that, stinking it up and leaving unsightly sweat stains. If I wear an undershirt, the sweat gets absorbed by the undershirt and leaves my uniform shirt intact.

This allows me to wear my uniform shirts several days at a time before washing them. Which is important, because I only have 2-3 of them, and if I washed them every day they would wear out/fade very quickly.

I am genuinely curious about this. I don’t see how feet could be so rough as to literally tear up a sheet. And if they are, there are remedies for that. I’m assuming you’re female, so why not use a pumice and some lotion to rid yourself of the callous problem?
