Relient K - Five Score and Seven Years Ago (new album)

Public service announcement: The new Relient K album is OUT.

Overall, I’m enjoying it quite a bit. The standouts so far are Come Right Out and Say It, Forgiven, Faking My Own Suicide, Must Have Done Something Right, and Deathbed.

I have to elaborate on Deathbed, which is the best song on the album, and maybe their best song in general, IMO right up there with stuff like For The Moments I Feel Faint and Be My Escape. It’s an epic 11 minute story-type song about a middle-aged man dying of lung cancer. It’s the most moving song I’ve heard in a long time, despite the fact that I don’t relate to the main character or his experiences at all (the songs that affect me the most are usually something I can relate to - like father/daughter stuff from Tori Amos).

If you’re a fan - definitely check it out. I’m enjoying it a lot more than Mmhmm so far, which I though was just OK aside from Be My Escape. You can hear most of it on their myspace page here. If you’ve never heard of them and are curious, listen to Must Have Done Something Right first. That’s probably the catchiest one in the new batch. You can also listen to a few older track here.
