This going to get me so killed, but I trust you are mature enough for this not to need to be in the Pit.
What religion (if any) do you practice? What are your thoughts on other’s religions? Keep this NICE people!
I’m a Christian, and I am a devout believer. I do not decry others who are not Christian (eg You SINNERS, you’re all heathens). In fact, I welcome them, even if they laugh at me reading my Bible etc.
Well, I don’t have a difinitive religion per se, but arguably I am an athiest.
I’m very open to other religions. Meaning, I believe you’re welcome to practice what you choose as long as it is your own and you don’t try to enforce it on others. I have my own set of moral constructs, which yes, are based on a traditional set Christian ethics and mores to some degree, but I incorporate facets of other religions, not to mention my own personal beliefs as well.
Well despite the fact that I believe in an entity I am actaully against the idea of organised religions.
I believe religion is a very personal thing and the ‘sharing’ of it leads to conflicts. Man’s inherant feeding of his insecurities (Mine is better than yours) and his ability to exploit situations for personal gain (see catholicism pretty much anytime in history) only support my idea that religion - while being opium for the masses and genuinelly providing comfort to some - is too prone to human manipulation. A tenant completely opposite to what I beleive religion should be.
Incidentally I rarely ‘worship’ in any way other than living to my ideals. Those ideals are a weird hybrid of many religions predominantly bhuddism and christianity. But I don’t share unless requested.
Like George Carlin, I used to be Irish Catholic, now I’m an American. Actually, I’m a dyslexic agnostic; I sit up all night pondering whether there really is a dog.
Alrighty then, cheap jokes aside. Personally, like dpr, I don’t believe in organized religon. At least not as pertaining to me personally. I believe in God, and I have a personal relationship with God. This does not require a place of worship or any other such trappings. I was Catholic as a child and survived a few years of parochial school, and that was all I needed. I swore off religon and have been that much more fulfilled as a result.
Unless Denis Leary actually forms the Lapsed Catholic Church as he has previously threatened to do. In that event I might reconsider.
I was raised Roman Catholic, and JBirdman just used the George Carlin joke I was going to rip off. But, like I said, I was raised Catholic, and never really subscribed to it of my own will. When I was old enough, I parted ways with the Church. No hard feelings, really, it just wasn’t me.
I’m a Philisophical Taoist. After leaving the church, I kind of went through some soul-searching (probably the best way to describe it). I came up with my own ideas about different things, specifically my spiritual beliefs. Then I found Taoism, which coincided with the beliefs that I had formed. I also liked that it’s inherently open to interpretation, and isn’t dogmatic in nature. I then started pursuing Taoism to the point that I would now call myself a Philisophical Taoist. There are Religious Taoists, with deities and many other religious elements, but that’s not what I mean. That’s not me.
I know, some might not consider it a religion. That’s fine. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a religion, though I have nothing against calling it that. It’s my philosophy.
Raised Baptist; no particular religion now, although, as others have said, I have a personal relationship with God and I pray often. I have a problem with any religion that says it’s the ONLY right one and the only way to salvation (and the Roman Catholic church said just that recently). There’s been an awful lot of torture and killing in the name of religion. While I believe in Christ, I don’t believe that you HAVE to be a Christian to be “saved” (whatever that means). I just try to live by the Golden Rule and the Ten Commandments.
I was brought up in a Catholic world ie. school, family members and 90%+ of the population of my country. My father is a atheist my mother believes in God but doesn’t do the organised religion thing .
I’m an atheist . I do not think there is any form of God governing my or anybody else’s life .
I realise that people could say that I have faith as it has not been proven either way and that’s fair enough . I’m not really bothered with semantics .
As to my feelings about people who have a religion or a belief system that is not mine . It doesn’t really bother me in the slightest , do what you want to but please don’t be judgmental about me or try to put the rules that are part of your belief structure on me .
I try to be open to all people , I actually think that a lot of the sayings and actions that are attributed to Jesus are some of the most sensible things ever said or made up , whatever the case may be . I do not need to think that he is the son of God to think that "Treat people in the way you would want to be treated yourself " is a good idea .
God (oops unintentional blaspheme), how many of us were bought up Catholics? Scary…
And ** yojimbo ** it IS a great quote. One of my friends has a similiar saying: “Christianity is a GREAT idea. It’s just a shame no-one’s ever tried it”
Yojimbo is my new god. Good sig.
Nothing organized for me either. But I believe there is too many checks and balances for the universe we live in, to be completely random.
Einstein proved we have a “soul” IMO. You can change the form of energy, but you can’t destroy it.
That’s what I think anyways…and the difference between me and a religionist is: **I’m open to being wrong. **
Hey, I’m open to being wrong, though I doubt God will be (un)proven until Judgement Day (my belief, maybe not yours).
I love that quote, it is cool. Actually, my church’s motto is "Bring people to Christ through the way we live our lives. I try to live a very Christian lifestyle, though I still get bugged. Oh well.
I was brought up as a Reformed (namely, High Holy Days) Jew, and have been agnostic since soon after my Bar Mitzvah. I know I have strong transcendental tendencies which I try to keep in check.
Hey Ender, I’m reading a book about you right now. Half way through it actually. I read the first book a couple of years ago and only now got around to book two.
Strikes me as funny that you are a religious person while Andrew Wiggin is not. At least not at this point in the book. Don’t give anything away, alright.
As for me. A Practicing jewish atheist - thank you very much. Religious groups with a doctrine that dictates they are better than others simply by virtue of their membership and beliefs always make my blood run cold. On the other hand, I don’t care what you do or how you do it as long as you are not oppressing or judging anyone else as a means of accomplishing your ideals.
Count me as another former Catholic. Spent about ten years “soul-searching” like silent_rob and developed a better relationship with God than at any other time in my life.
I’m now attending a Baptist church with my SO but, am not completely happy. It makes him happy though, so I go.
Very practicing, very devout (or trying to be), very happy-with-my-church non-denominational Christian Church/Church of Christ person here.
What are your thoughts on others’ religions? I, for one, always try to treat people with respect, and that includes people whose beliefs are different from mine. The few people that I’ve met from other religions (or different sects within my own religion) I’ve given as much respect and kindness as I’d give anyone else. In fact, I’ve been known to ask questions (without proselytizing or trying to tear down their beliefs) in order to try to learn more about a person.
