I am surprised at the OP. MsWhatsit usually says shit that I agree with. However, she is dropping the ball on this one. The atheists are supposed to be the cool cats and the religious right is supposed to be the kind of cornballs that get offended at shit like this. I am reluctant to respond to it, since I can’t be sure that in another five hours there won’t be another post further revising and extending your remarks. Although considering that I can’t make heads or tails of what it is you’re driving at in the paragraph that you allegedly couldn’t say to me, perhaps that’s not a bad thing. It seems that you’re giving yourself an indulgence for jerky remarks here for earlier good works performed elsewhere (to wit, your extraordinary charity in not reproaching dying Christians and Hindus when you once volunteered at a hospice).

On a serious note, those comments are quite harmless-- close to nothing-- all things considered. I’ve seen some downright… terrible… comments from some of the more liberal/non-religious folks around here.
Meh. I get what you’re saying, MsWhatsit, but Christers are going to do what they do. It’s a bit like pitting dogs for chewing bones.
Hitchens was by all accounts a difficult, argumentative man, who was in his own words seduced by opposition. The fact that he’s gotten so far under the skin of religionists that they gloat at his passing is more of a compliment than anything else.

Agreed. As far as preachy bullshit, the stuff in that thread was very very tame. Hitchens had a tough skin, so I doubt he’d be concerned about that sort of thing.

I dunno, I’ve re-read the original thread a couple of times and the comments I quoted in the OP still just come across really douchey to me.
I wouldn’t say I’m “offended,” though. To me, “offended” implies Kyle’s mom from South Park, gasping, “What what what!” and running around with hands on hips shouting, “How dare you!”
My reaction was more, “ugh, that was douchey.”
