Seems like there’s so much going on in these groups, it’s amazing that this one guy’s misdeed even rated a thread. So it seems to be what people said in the thread (over and over and over) that it wouldn’t have become the clusterfuck that it did if he hadn’t immediately started making threats.
(At least, I think he started with the threats in his first post. That whole thread gave me a headache; I only skimmed the first few pages.)
But I’m curious about something. The screencaps that I saw showed the “visitor” as a semi-transparent figure. How is it that Cecilantas wasn’t able to see that?
IIRC from watching my brother play similar games, you get a “character eye’s view”, or a view from just behind and over the head of your character, in the direction that you’re facing, which, in poor Cecil’s case, was towards the wall. (And I’m not sure how much he was looking at his monitor anyway, ifyouknowhwatImean!) Also, the spying character is a thief, with high skills on stealthiness and sneaking about. Perhaps the system makes this happen by making his character invisible to those in the room, or at least to those who aren’t looking for him, or have a specified “observation skills” score or something.
The screencaps were from the spy’s computer, and therefore from his character’s POV, not Cecil’s.
You’re welcome. And I’m ashamed I knew enough to explain it.
There’s 1220 Google hits for “Ceciliantas”! And all of them seem relevant! I’m only on page 6 of the original thread, and this is the funniest clusterfuck I’ve ever read.
I finally found a message board that had a snippet of the relevant part on page 8 (Cerri’s link is down for me). Apparantly the guy Morsereg was claiming that it was Dadani’s friend who ripped them off and he knew nothing about it and Dadani was a person who he had briefly met once yadda yadda(or something to that effect). The problem is that he wrote this while logged in as Dadani, blowing the scam and completing the karmic circle.
And b]Necro Romancer’s** and poeticyde’s posts had me rolling.
Wow… every time I think I am a bit of a geek, I read about someone out there who is so much worse. Now it looks like there is a whole community of people much worse off in the whole Geekdom sweepstakes than me.
I love games on computer and Xbox. I don’t love games on computer and xbox. I think people need to know the difference.
At least this loser won’t breed anytime soon… I hope.
Some high school kid was performing in front of a security camera, using a broom handle or something as a lightsaber. Funny, but not, IMO, something at which to howl in derision. Especially considering that it first appeared on some kind of geek-friendly site, which meant that the people originally saying “BWAH what a loser!” had more in common with this kid than not. The owner of the site thought much the same thing, which is why he disabled all threads relating to the video.
Anyway, check it out if you like. I think it’s funny, but only in the sense of “laughing with”. I mean, c’mon, who among us (literally, us at the SDMB has never had the urge to do a Jedi act whilst holding a broom or mop?
I think it was hugely funny, and most of the comments I heard were supportive in one way or another. There was even a fan club that was going to get together the money to give this unfortunate some real lessons, IIRC.
Yeah, most of the comments I heard were around the ‘dude, that could have been ME at 15!’ school of thought… I know that certainly applied to me at 15 or 16 (except I was more athletic - I was that rare breed of smart jock in high school)…
Here’s a link of most of what happened. It wasn’t just that the kid was seen by so many people, but that he was actually put on the news due to the fame he was getting.
As others have said a lot of the replies to SWK were tongue-in-cheek teasing and stuff, since everyone (yes, you too) has done something silly like that. Ceciliantas, on the other hand, is a tool who should be pointed and laughed at long and hard.
