Sorry for the duplicate post, waited to long to try and edit and I couldn’t see what I posted
Going to get one for Mom for Christmas and decided to get one for myself. I looked at some Vipers and one from Compuserve. Was about to order the latter but read that it requires a BLADE-AL Bypass Module. It also said that almost all cars made after 2000 do. Did not see any mention of this on the VIper site or other company’s. Is this module required for all remote starters or only if you want to use your car’s key fob to start?
Anyway, hoping to stay under $200 (not including installation, I know someone who can do it
It looks like the bypass module is needed on cars that have immobilizer security systems, which are pretty common. For instance I had a 2001 Honda Accord that used a chip in the key that was read by the car in order to start the car. A new key that was cut but didn’t have the chip programmed would turn in the ignition cylinder but wouldn’t start the car. I guess the module overrides this since you won’t have a key in or near the car when you use the remote starter.
Looking at a Compustar site, I did see that it mentioned the bypass module in the ’ What’s Included’ section, though without explanation of what it is for.
Don’t mean to discourage you but depending on the model of car installing a remote start system can be incredibly difficult.
Installed one on my wife’s Jeep. Had to remove the entire dash. Then had to install an ignition bypass with an electronic key that permanently stayed in it. What a major pain in the ass. Plus it cost more with the extra parts than if I had taken it somewhere.
My Chevy truck came with one factory installed. And I found a place that installs them for about $450 complete. I will never, ever install one myself again.
