Removal of transplanted tissue - anti-rejection drugs discontinued?

I recall a case where a man who lost his hand and part of his forearm in an accident recieved a transplanted limb; although the operation was a reasonable success, he became more and more unhappy with it and eventually it was amputated.

In these circumstances, is it no longer necessary to continue taking anti-rejection medicines?

The chap you’re remembering is Clint Hallam.

And the answer to your question is…

Yes, if you remove the transplanted tissue you discontinue the anti-rejection drugs. At that point there is no longer any reason to take them, and a bunch of reasons to stop.
