Removed some online games and busted internet access- Assistance appreciated.

For a variety of reasons, mainly relating to getting homework done, I had to remove a number of online games from my son’s PC this evening ,including Starcraft, Quake, WOW etc . The online games also had a fair number of “helper” & online accessory apps that I removed as well.

Now Internet access is hosed, and the little “local area connection” linked PCs icon the bottom right has one of those yellow triangles indicating that it has a serious bellyache of some kind. Attempts to use the “repair” functiion on this gives the message that the IP address cannot be released or reset. So, it appears likely that one of these little helper apps took some driver or other necessary protocol or binary with it out of spite when I installed it.

The OS is Windows XP. Unit is attached to a 5 port Linksys WPC54G wireless router. I tried activating and deactivating windows firewall, tried removing and reinstalled the Ethernet adapter - nothing

Is there some easy to use applet that will repair the broken Internet function?.

Assuming you have the setup info from your ISP handy, write down exactly what is in the properties of Local Area Connection. Minimum is likely to be tcpip, lan card, and MS Network client. You can delete them all and reboot, which should reinstall the Lan driver. Add TCPIP and set it up like the ISP wants.

If that sounds too drastic for you, open a Dos box and do IPCONFIG /ALL and post the results here pls.

The TCP-IP module in Properties was resisting being removed for some reason. I’ll try again tomorrow.

This looks promising
