Since it’s nearly time to pay for another year of membership, I tried to use my credit card to pay for it (following the advice in this thread in ATMB). I went to Paypal and removed my credit card from them - according to their messages, I now had 0 credit cards associated with my Paypal account. I came back to the Straight Dope and, long story short, was forced to use Paypal to pay for my year’s membership because my credit card is still linked to Paypal.
I tried again today to remove my credit card from Paypal - same results. I get a message saying the credit card is gone, have a nice day, then when I tried to get around Paypal here, my credit card has magically re-appeared in Paypal again, and I would once again be forced to use Paypal if I wanted to buy a custom membership here. Back to the Paypal site - oh, look, there’s my credit card, associated with the account again.
I never wanted a Paypal account; I was forced to open one years ago for some reason I can’t even remember now. I have a limited, secure online credit card that I use that has protections and insurances I want; I don’t want to use Paypal. After seeing how they seem to be misleading me about removing my credit card, I want to use them even less. I’m open to the possibility that I’m doing something wrong, though - am I missing a step, even though I’m getting a message that says my credit card has indeed been removed from my Paypal account?
I’ve never had trouble removing or adding cards.
I suspect Paypal makes you have at least one credit card associated with the account.
To make life easier for you just call your credit card company and say you lost the card. In a week you will have a new card with a new number. Thus you don’t have to worry about it anymore.
Or you can buy a gift card (make sure it’s the type you can buy online stuff with. You need to have an address registered to the same address as your paypal account or it won’t work)
Then add your gift card and remove your credit card.
Again it can’t be a gift card with a Visa logo you buy in a store. You have to be able to associate it with an address so PP can verify it
why not put that card on paypal? You dont actually have to use paypal and having it sitting there is not an issue, or cancel paypal totally if you dont use it.
I’ve been trying to pay for my membership here using my credit card but not going through Paypal. Thanks to Ed and TubaDiva, we’ve figured out that you have to delete your cookies after removing your credit card number from Paypal, then not sign in again here when Paypal tells you you have an account with them - there is a much smaller, almost unnoticeable option to “continue without signing in,” and that must be used or Paypal will grab your credit card number again, put it back on your account, and process your payment through Paypal.
ETA: I also have a Custom Title paid for now, thanks to all my fooling around, trying to figure out how to pay for things here without going through Paypal.
