removing furniture impressions from carpet

I don’t know if they have a name, but I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. We recently moved furniture (bed, dressers, etc) from a room a couple of weeks ago. The carpet where the posts and legs were is all smashed. I was hoping the carpet would eventually “relax” and the impressions would disappear.

Will they?

If not, what can I do to make them go away?

Depends somewhat on the material of the carpet fibers. What are they wool, nylon, etc.?

One method that sometimes works is to steam them, and then either let them dry, or vacuum them. Shampooing the carpet is also said to help with this.
