I’m in the process of stripping the paint off some rusty shelf brackets and repainting them. At the moment, I’m using a drill press with an abrasive type wheel. It’s doing a decent job, but it’s time consuming, dusty and really doesn’t get in to the tight corners very well.
I’m going to guess it’s an enamel paint on the brackets given the way it’s flaking off any where that has rust, but I really don’t know. What I’m hoping for is something I can spray or wipe on them, or even soak them in that will help speed the process along somewhat. Any suggestions?
BTW, these are from a reach in cooler like you see in a grocery store and I can’t seem to find replacements on line. Even if I do find them, I get the feeling they’ll be expensive.
We did that at first, but for some reason as soon as you start painting, the edges of the adhering paint start lifting. Also, some of the paint that needs to be removed is in such tight areas we’re having a hard time getting at it.
Ideally, you’d have them powdercoated in the color you want. The process includes surface prep (sandblasting). The shop I use has a $50.00 minimum charge. Obviously, without knowing how many shelves and their sizes, it’s impossible to give you an idea of cost.
There’s probably about 50 brackets. Not only that, but they cannot all be removed at once since we still need to sell stuff from them. We took two brackets out of another area, cleaned and painted them. Then we swapped them out for the next two lather rinse repeat…It’s going to be a long process which is why I’m wondering if there’s a chemical that we can get that’ll help remove the paint.
