Removing Remnants of Excite@Home (Windows)

It took me a bit of time to sort this one out so I thought I would pass it along in the hope that others would be spared the treasure hunt.

For those people switching from the @Home service to other services (AT&T in my case), you may notice that the proxy:8080 keeps reappearing in the Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings dialog. The annoying symptom of this problem is that whenever you start IE, you are taken to the transition page of AT&T.

To get rid of this behavior:

  1. Start Menu/Run…
  2. Enter: regsvr32 /u ahiehelp.dll
  3. Click OK
  4. Click OK
  5. Say aloud: Good Riddance

You should also remove all @Home software from your system.

Well, I still have excite@Home but I never installed their software in the first place. I’ve found it to be much more reliable just to set up the browser and say the heck with the stupid software.
