Tiny scratches. It passes the “Don’t bother to try to fix it yourself if you can fit your fingernail into the grooves” test. The Google has given me several solutions, one of which has not worked, and the rest of which are the reason I’m creating this thread.
One solution was to spread toothpaste on the glass, let dry, then buff away with a damp cloth. I tried this last night, and now have scratched, minty glass. The other solutions involve using electric buffers, ammonia, buckets, and various solutions that seem a bit overkill for a watch. Yes, that’s what we’re talking about here, an ordinary wristwatch. No, I don’t want to buy a new one because I like it, and it’s solar-powered, and it was a present that I intend to keep until the sun burns out.
Some other solutions I saw were to use clear finger nail polish or furniture polish. Now before I go moseying on down to the five and dime to buy nail and furniture polish, I’d like to know if any of this stuff actually works.
Or is it best to just go to a horologist or jeweler instead of being Madame Cheappeau? Thanks.
I suspect the watch face isn’t actually glass but a plastic (if it’s really glass discontinue reading…)
There’s a plastic polish “Nexus” which comes in 3 grades. Grades are for deep(er) scratches down to just polishing. You can buy a pack of all three grades. I use it to polish motorcycle windshields, auto headlight covers, etc.
Works pretty well. Takes a good bit of rubbing, tho’.
