They were always a “gay” couple, or at least a couple of ass-fetishists. But kinda of the fun of it was that no one said so, and it wasn’t made explicit in the show.
Exactly, I have no idea why they would just come out and basicly let it be known. Like you said, the fun was never knowing “for sure”.
I must have missed an episode where John K hints at R&S being gay. Sorry, I dont buy it. Just because a dog and a cat are living together doesn’t mean they go on nightly fudgepacking excursions.
it was hinted at before in the series, especially in the Son of Stimpy episode. they pretty much let you know in that one that ren and stimpy were a gay couple. lol
I vote for Stimpy being the bottom-he’s pretty submissive.
And Ren’s a raving control freak. He’d be a top.

Hints were dropped in the original series that Ren & Stimpy might be gay, but it was never obvious.
Making Ren & Stimpy a gay couple is neither clever nor funny and if that clip is any indication of how it’ll be portrayed, seems more than a little homophobic.
And to think I was actually looking forward to Ren & Stimpy’s return to television . . .

the scene in the son of stimpy episode is just about of that clip’s caliber. ren tries to take stimpy’s mind of stinky by pointing out they under are the mistletoe and stimpy starts crying and asks ren if sex is all he ever thinks about. or something along those lines. it’s been a while since i’ve seen it. maybe i’ll track it down and watch it again.
anyhoo, i think it’s a little premature to start saying ren and stimpy are out of the closet based on a short clip. it could be an isolated joke and what you see there is about as far as it ever goes.
Well, in part that was because it wasn’t a format in which it made sense for it to be an issue: it was cartoon supposedly for kids, and it was just supposed to be crazy slapstick antics not unlike all the other goofy toons. Of course, this one prominently featured spongebaths, playful animal nudity, and lots of super-detailed close-ups of warty, hairy butts.
To me, taking the “subtext” out of the “gay subtext” is trivial.
The important thing is that John Kricfalusi is back at the helm. This means that I’ll watch. And enjoy.
The soul-less, unfunny, John K-less Ren & Stimpy was hurtful and confusing.
Because we all know hetero couples showing hairy asses, spongbaths and playful animal nudity in a slapsticky way is just fine for kids, but homos are just. . .

i never got the impression that ren and stimpy was for kids and was always amused that it got picked up by nikelodeon considering its always very adult humor. as far as that clip goes, i thought it was funny and not any different in tone than what you saw on the original episodes.
If there is any question as to if they are out of the closet now or not, then watch this, it basicly confirms everything.

To clear things up: I never understood how anyone thought that Ren and Stimpy was for kids. Not that it was inappropriate, but rather that it was too divinely deranged for kids to appreciate. Nick must just have been looking for cartoons, and didn’t look hard enough at quite how out there R&S actually was. JK’s flash cartoons are even zanier (I love the bit with the dancing shit globs and the happy sun)
