"Renowned Fitness Celebrity" John Basedow

This guy’s ads are all over late night TV–what’s the deal? Does he deserve to be so renowned?

He’s so renowned that I have never heard of him…
I love it when the pretty girl in the infomercials is introduced as ‘TV Personality So and So’.

I have also never heard of him, and if there’s a fitness guru I haven’t heard of, well…

In addition, he’s selling a load of BS. Fitness is NOT measured by how little body fat you posses, but by how much work you can do and how efficiently your body works. Have you looked at his face? He looks like he is starved. It’s not healthy for your body to be that ripped as a matter of course. The bodybuilders you see in magazines with ultra-defined bodies only achieve that look after extra-strict dieting and dehydration. After competition season is over, they put body fat back on.

FWIW, I’d like to go on the record here and state unequivocally that bodybuilding a la Basedow [sp.?] is…

NOT sexy.

Not in the least bit, m’kay? The guy’s a friggin’ posterboy for physique-oriented narcissism, and the way he poses and presents himself in those commercials makes me wonder if 1) he isn’t some sort of gay icon (not that there’s anything wrong with that!), or 2) is trying to become one.

But the main problem for me is, after the initial “wow” impression registers, I wonder just how much of his time and energy goes into maintaining that physique, and at the expense of what other enriching, interesting pursuits, or just plain stupid fun, for that matter.

For me, at least, personality, knowledgeability, character and wit are more important than physique. And if a guy looks that good, then he’s just working too hard. God knows I’m not!

I’ve been thinking about starting a thread on Fitness Celebrity John Basedow for a long time. Every time he comes on the tee vee, my husband or I will holler, “Hey! It’s Fitness Celebrity John Basedow!” I haven’t been able to formulate a good rant about him, though. All I really wanted to say is:

  1. He doesn’t look good.

  2. WTF does “fitness celebrity” mean?

Don’cha just love the way he runs his hands over his body in the commercials? Ick ick ick!!

Ick Ick Ick Ick

Creeeepy

Whenever his commercial comes on, the SO and I always refer to him as “Fitness Freak” John Basedow. I think this is a clever scam on his part, he is no celebrity at all. Or the word “celebrity” is a very relative term (i.e. he’s appeared in these commericals and all of a sudden he’s a celebrity).
