I’m thinking of replacing the windows on my house. The house was built in 1954, and I think most of the windows are original, so they are single pane. I live in Tucson, so the main energy needed is to keep the heat out.
I had a high quality company come and give me a quote on the front half of the house. It gets the most direct sun and since it is what you see from the street, the increased beautification would have the most value. For just 7 widows (mostly large ones) he wanted $9,000! Yikes! Another company, with a lower quality windows wanted $6,400.
Does this cost seem reasonable? Who has done this? How much energy cost savings did you see? I’ve read anywhere from 10% to 40%. Our average energy bill is $200 a month, but that is for everything, not just AC, but also the washing machine and oven.
Is it worth it?
