I’m probably the only one who doesn’t know the difference between Replies a Views on the index pages. I’ve posted a question, got a transfer note by TubaDiva and it counted as one reply and five views.
Views is how many people looked at your thread.
Many people read threads but have no reason to comment on them.
The “meaning” of thread views has been debated.
It’s not really popularity, but a curiosity count.
Some with the highest view rates have racy titles, but the topic is tame and no one answers.
Some threads have high views and are also high interest, like announcements, but again don’t require answers.
The view number is really only important on other boards than this one, where threads may not be seen by anyone for days.
You got one reply.
Five people looked at that thread. (Well, actually four other people and the person that replied makes five.) Anybody that opens up the thread is counted as a “view.”
Hope this straightens it out all for you.

Tx, guys. I got it. I guess I thought to deal with something more similar to “point of view”, while here it’s more like in “observation”. But it’s OK, as long as I know what is meant. On the second thought, TubaDiva, you, guys, actually do not know who read the post, who just glanced at it for a sec, and who read just the first line or two and lost interest.
So, perhaps “views” will eventually be replaced with “visits” or “visited”.
Pardon me, but I don’t see the difference between, “views” and “visits.” Nor is that column heading likely to be changed. Ya see, this is a piece of readily available commercial software. If it is ever changed, the revision would have to come from the programmers at http://www.vBulletin.com. Maybe you could suggest it to them on the message board they have over there?
It was my understanding that you guys could change things like that on your own. Didn’t the Chicago Reader tech guys change the location of the “New Thread” button on the topic list page so that it looked right for Netscape users? Not that I’m suggesting that it should be changed, but I was under the impression that the techs for this site actually could make that change.
Not that I’m aware of, wj2. Even if your statement is correct, though, I wouldn’t hold my breath expecting “views” to be changed to “visits.”
Neither would I, but I do try to know as much as possible about how the software works. I like to think that I’m one of the better authorities on the workings of vBulletin around here, at least among the ordinary members. My interest was only in determining whether my previous understanding was correct.
IIRC, The change that was effected for Netscape involved a fix by vB applied by the techs.
In any event, perhaps we need to remind folks that while we’re trying to be sensitive to the needs and wants of our Teeming Millions, basic board functionality is the biggest thing we’re concerned about and everything else that comes after is extra. As far as the Reader technical staff goes, we ain’t the only thing on their agenda by a long shot. As long as you can access the site and read and write to it, their job is done. Nothing personal, just a fact o’life.

I apologize if my obserbations disturbed anybody. I am happy with the way the things are. “Views” or “Visits” really does not matter, as long as I know what is meant. As far as any changes, they are up to the administration. These BB are the most advanced I came across; besides, there is a point in any enterprise when it becomes ovedesigned. These boards are easy to read (high contrast, B on W), easy to scroll, etc. Perhaps, B on eggshell would be easier on eyes, but I do not spend that many hours here, and I am contend. Good attitude of moderators is more important. Keep it this way, our humble TubaDiva!
We used to use a different software, called Ultimate Bulletin Board, or UBB for short. That was $170 software, vBulletin is $250 software, hence the cooler look. Actually, UBB had its advantages, the main reason for the change was that UBB was choking on the sheer size of the SDMB.
If you want to see UBB, you can always check the Fabulous Forums of Fathom, a message board run by one of the long-time posters here, dedicated to similar interests and containing many people from here. Either software is far better than that crap where you have to open each post separately. Bah!
