Report function triggers 60 second waiting period?

So we’ve got one of those fake passport guys spamming up the place tonight. I’ve reported a couple of his threads, and both times, when I went to post that I’d done so, I had to wait 60 seconds before “posting again”.

I don’t remember encountering this before…seems like I used to be able to report a thread and immediately post that I’d reported it. Did something change?

Totally not a big deal or anything, just thought it was odd…

Experienced same thing.

It’s not new. I’ve experienced it, too. It’s not a big deal though. I don’t often report threads 60 seconds apart from each other.

Oddly enough, it counts as a post, but I’ve found if you post, to the thread, “reported” you can still make your report less than sixty seconds later, but you can’t do it the other way around.

IOW, you can’t report something and then post to a thread within sixty seconds.
You can post to a thread then report a post within sixty seconds.

I’m just responding to let you know that I’ve seen this, but I ain’t got a clue how/when the 60-sec rule comes into play. I’ll find out and get someone who knows to post explanation.

It seems to be a default in vBulletin, because I’ve run into the same problem on another board.

It’s been this way as long as I remember. I’ve tried to report two different posts in succession, and always had to wait. Since then, I’ve just reported one post and mentioned the other(s) in the report.

EDIT: Misunderstood. Sorry.

Maybe that’s the way I’ve done it in the past.

Thanks Dex. No rush or anything, I’m just curious.

It sounds like the system considers “report post” the same sort of thing as making a post.

I’ve never seen that before but vB does odd stuff sometimes.

Remember that before we can try to fix something we have to be able to demonstrate it to tech. Problems that are non-reproducible are damn near impossible to do anything about.

This is easy to reproduce. I just reported some spam in GQ, then immediately tried to post that I reported. I got the message telling me I can’t post twice in 60 seconds and was told to wait.

It’s the email flood check feature. It prevents any user of the boards from sending emails in less than a set amount of time. If you want to change it from 60 seconds to something else, change the value in the AdminCP / vBulletin Options / Email Flood Check field.

I’m not sure this even qualifies as a problem. I can either post then report as mentioned above, or wait 60 seconds to post after reporting. No huhu.

But something got changed recently. This started maybe 2-3 weeks ago.

I think it’s been that way considerably longer. I usually post “reported”, then report the spam, because the timeout only happens if you report, then post - and I have been doing it this way, because of the timeout, for many months.

I’ve always reported then post and I noticed the rather sudden change very recently.

Maybe it varies by browser or OS?

I’ve noticed it for much longer than that.

Ah, flood check! If distant memory serves, put in place because of a long-ago attack situation where something kept hitting the server. Flood check is one of the ways you fight back.

For obvious reasons that’s not likely to be changed and we apologize for any inconvenience that may cause you. It would be so nice if we didn’t live in a world that had crap like this but we do.
