On the other hand, Veronica probably was one of the Marys. The Gospels just say that “one of the women” wiped Jesus’ face with a cloth. It was later tradition that added the bit about his image remaining on the cloth. And then, once that tradition was established, the unspecified woman who did the wiping came to be known as “Veronica”, or “true image”. So Veronica actually had some other name, and we don’t know what it was, but playing the odds, it was likely Mary, since Jesus had multiple women named that in his inner circle.
But getting back to the main topic,
I don’t think he is, actually. All of his lies have been really easy to fact-check, once anyone bothered trying. I think that his only “skill” is in being lucky, to have been in the right place at the right time when the media and oppo research had gotten complacent enough to let an absolutely blatant liar through.
Santos has the ability to look somebody in the eye and tell a absolute lie without flinching.
After that, it’s a lot more difficult to fact-check a claim that you feel repentant than it is to fact-check a claim that you graduated from Baruch or you worked for Citicorp.
He’d probably brag on social media about how he got away with it. And even if he didn’t, he’d just immediately start on a new stream of verifiable lies.
It worked for me - thanks for the gift link. This was my favorite part:
And lo did he go unto Congress from New York, and then after he did go, it was revealed unto them that he was not who he said he was, not even to a small degree, and this was the first miracle wrought by George Santos. And everyone marveled and said, “Who is this man?” And then they said, “No, for real, who is this man? We do not know who this man is.”
With competing resolutions from both the Committee Chair and House Dems, the latter raised today as a Point of Privilege, the House has two legislative days to decide if/when they call this to the Floor again.
Actually hard to tell still if they’ll get to 290 votes as of this week.
Eh, I’m of many minds. Should Santos be kicked out? Certainly! But the damage is largely done - and while I’d love to further shave the (R) majority in House, his antics are far from the most damaging. If they can’t kick him out, his ongoing scandals will have a small but probably non-zero negative effect on any (R) efforts in his area, state, and possibly the national level. Especially if people get energized in the trashing of various (R) defenders that prevent him from being kicked out.
Put the puppy and veteran pics up all the damn time. Point out that Republican XYZ refused to remove Santos who ROBS VETS and PREVENTS DOGS FROM GETTING CARE. Sure, most (R) are by this point far removed from criticizing their team over any political or personal excess (okay, other than Trump who has a hypnotic hold on his people) , but they’ll be horrified when animals or important people like white, male vets are hurt. [ major /s on the whole important bit in case I wasn’t clear! ].
If any Republicans vote to keep him (and you know there will be some), then absolutely, run those ads against them. But that’s no reason for sane people to vote to keep him.
Absolutely, as I said, “If they can’t kick him out”. The Democrats can’t do it by themselves, so if the Republicans vote to keep him in to prevent a further narrowing of their margin, come down on them with all possible boots (both boots are simply insufficient for that crowd!).
Per Politico, Santos held a press conference this morning to reiterate that he won’t resign and that he’ll use his last remaining days to make a spectacle of himself. My favorite line from the article: “Rep. Zach Nunn (R-Iowa), who walked by Santos’ press conference on Thursday, was overheard saying: ‘What a joke.’”
The most interesting point I see of this is Santos could certainly start naming names if he actually had any actionable dirt on anyone. And I’d expect those someone’s to be trying to prevent that happening. And trying with increasing desperation as the time of reckoning draws nigh.
So far the general R congressman’s reaction has been “Yeah, so. Bring your nothingburger if you want. I don’t care.”
Which to me is a bit surprising. I’d have expected a more craven approach from the other Rs.
