Representative George Santos: Indictment and Prosecution (Expelled from Congress on Dec 1, 2023)

I can’t wait to see the shit fit he throws. With any kind of luck, some of it will get on some of his fellow party members.

I think he’ll go quietly. He threw his shit fit a week ago and knew this was happening.

Depends what you mean by “close.” They needed 290 votes to expel, so they had a margin of 21. Not razor thin, but not a blowout on what - in a saner universe - should have been a vote of 424-1.

GOP Rep. George Santos told CNN after the House voted to expel him that “it’s over.”

“The House spoke that’s their vote. They just set new dangerous precedent for themselves,” he added.

When asked if he would still stay and use nonmember privileges because he is not convicted, Santos said, "Why would I want to stay here? To hell with this place.”

Pressed if he knew this was how it was going to go, Santos said, “I had no skin in the game.”

And then he said, “You know what? As unofficially no longer a member of Congress, I no longer have to answer your questions.”

basically, i didn’t want to be here anyway, later losers, wah, wah, wah.

Thank you. And good.

I wonder what he expected to happen. That no one would (eventually) notice all his lying and stealing? Or that he’d somehow develop a trump-esque following that would protect him?

Say what? A vote on whether you get kicked out or not is pretty much the definition of having skin in the game.

He appears to be a lifelong con artist, and not a very good one. Unlikely he had an endgame, it was entirely and solely in the pursuit of personal profit.

Unless you didn’t care about the job in the first place. He certainly behaved like he didn’t care about it.

And hopefully Trump will be right behind him.

As I mentioned upthread, under NY law Governor Hochul must announce a special election within 10 days of being notified of the vacancy, and that election must happen between 70 and 80 days from that announcement. Assuming the Clerk notifies her today and she schedules the special as soon as possible, the earliest Santos’ replacement could be seated is February 8th-ish. That would mean the seat will be empty when Congress must pass the budget or another CR to avoid a shutdown.

GOP Rep says he and his mother were among Santos’s victims:

Ouch. That’s gotta’ hurt.

Yeah, I am wondering about the reverberations of this, too. In the short term, the whole budget mess is concerning, but without Santos, does that give the Dems an edge? Longer term, is it possible to flip his seat to D?

Santos podcast in 3…2…1…

His seat is very flippable. But it would have been easier to flip with Santos as the opponent.

Do we know who is lined up to take the seat?

Or maybe I should say run for.

"Why would I want to stay here? To hell with this place.”

We now have a new gold standard for the definition of sour grapes.

mmm

Unfortunately Republicans did fairly well in last month’s local elections, especially those exploiting the “cut taxes” rhetoric, so if that’s a continuing trend, things don’t look too great for Dems.

I’m embarrassed, ashamed and angry to say that Santos was my representative. No, I didn’t vote for him and I can’t think of any really outstanding candidates. Here’s one possible, Tom Suozzi, who has some baggage:

Anna Kaplan is a possible:

In the immortal words of Clark W. Griswold, Jr.:

I would not look at it that way - the worst Dems can do here is break-even. The upside/opportunity seems to be fairly significant.
