Representative George Santos: Indictment and Prosecution (Expelled from Congress on Dec 1, 2023)

Unfortunately, he’ll get into more trouble for the second part (moving to his own pocket) than he will for the first (steal from the donors).

Did Santos provide any value to the GOP? Did he reliably vote along party lines? If not, then I can see why the GOP was willing to lose his vote in a time of slim majorities.

I’m thinking this was a question from CNN? What did they mean by “stay and use nonmember privileges”? What nonmember privileges?

A few more details on what happens next from CNN:

  • although NY law says the governor must announce an election within 10 days, and it must take place in 70-80 days, evidently the governor can just…not do that? There is precedent for not following those rules - when Tom Reed resigned in 2021, those rules weren’t followed. Furthermore, with the announced retirement of Brian Higgins in February, the governor might choose to run those elections together.

  • Because Santos has not yet been convicted of crimes, he still retains some privileges including access to the House floor, dining room, gym and cloakroom. The expulsion resolution could have removed those privileges, but didn’t. However, if he actually used those privileges, it is likely the House would change those rules to remove them.

  • The sign in front of his office at the Capitol has already been removed and replaced with a generic one reading “Office of the Third Congressional District of New York.”

Okay, so that answers my question about the nonmember privileges. But WTH? It boggles my mind that they wouldn’t just remove him completely. If he’s out of the House, why does he need to be using the dining room or whatever?

I think you answered your own question. He wouldn’t, therefore there’s no need to take the extra steps to remove those other privileges as well.

Part of me wants to see them just blatantly delay the election, in order to see all the spittle flying from the mouth of the party of “but what if we … didn’t?”

I could see him coming back to eat there and make a spectacle, but it seems like he’s not going to do that. I’m a bit surprised he didn’t try to use the “I’m a martyr” or “I’m being bullied” angle for a little longer.

But what could the party have done? They couldn’t have barred him from the ballot, could they?

Advertise that he’s full of crap, with evidence. I’m guessing if that message was coming from your own party then it would tank the nomination.

Man, if they can do this to triple-Nobel prize winners who was awarded the Heisman trophy while their poor mother was killed in the Holocaust (prior to dying at the 9/11 attacks), they can do this to anybody. :worried:

No one is safe! :scream:

He might as well show up Monday for lunch in the dining room. What the hell at this point.

If it’s free food, why not? After all, he won’t be drawing another Congressional paycheck.

what, no fractional reps? - never mind the irrational part of the House…

A tip, @Mundane_Super_Hero - in the imgflip page, right-click on the image (or long-press on a mobile device) and select “Open image in new tab.” Then copy the URL of that tab and paste that into your post, and it will show much nicer.

Why was George Santos expelled from Congress? Because he became too woke.

Opinion | Congress may expel George Santos, but they will never take away his dignity.

The expulsion of another embattled Republican could give Lauren Boebert a free hand to firm up support.

Santos-Menendez unity ticket?

Scott Perry voted against Santos’ expulsion. I wonder why.
