One difference is that an ethics committee had a finding regarding Santos. Also, the number of alleged Santos crimes is higher. But I think the charges against Menendez are more relevant to the job of being a sitting senator.
It could be that Santos did, in fact, steal Miller’s card number… but it could also be that Miller and his mother did actually make payments to PACs above the legal limit, and he’s just using Santos as a convenient excuse. Either one would be entirely within character.
This would be one of the guys who should have been investigating the opposition but didn’t?
Which would bring it further into the realm of dodgy design since one would imagine it would be a prudent thing for a campaign or PAC to program into the system to flag the cap limit. What is usually the practice is that when the committee puts together and files the periodic finance reports, if any excess or disallowed donation is detected, you refund it in a timely manner and note so in the report, and most of the time that’s good enough. You don’t just keep it and make the affected person and his credit card issuer fight you for it.
But then again people really need to learn again to read their credit card statements…
I can (almost) understand the Republican House Leadership voting not to expell Santos because EVERY OTHER House expulsion was either from The Confederacy, or was CONVICTED of a federal crime.
Then I see this as a symptom of our current atmosphere. Yeah, every other one was covicted prior to expulsion because others had the decency to resign before being expelled. Kinda like Nixon resigned; Trump said “Bring it on!”
Right, the Old Normal was in fact premised on that if you were up against major scandal or prosecution, you’d rather spare the institution and having to force your colleagues to judge you.
Today there’s Bob Menendez and George Santos.
OTOH the Senate Republicans had let Nixon know they would not have his back.
Menendez spokesman Michael Zhadanovsky brushed off the complaint in a statement to The Hill on Saturday.
“George Santos is neither Rep. Menendez’s colleague nor a constituent so we will not expend any energy responding to his Botox-fueled fits of rage,” he said.
In response, LaLota spokesman Will Kiley told The Hill that “George is just mad the congressman has three actual degrees, while he lied about one.”
That guy’s told so many lies, I’ve questioned his very existence!
Someone on another board, upon hearing the news, said she thought of Hall & Oates’ “She’s Gone” with slightly altered lyrics. I replied that I don’t think anyone is going to be willing to pay the devil to replace him, and several other people told her about the current H&O lawsuit, which she didn’t know about.
I remember how much my brother, who like me was a teenager in the early and/or mid 1980s, hated Hall & Oates’ music, but in recent years, he’s become a big fan of Daryl Hall’s renovation program on the DIY Channel.
Yes, the campaign strategists really messed up, but of course they won’t admit it. Isaac Goldberg - BerlinRosen
All the wins listed in this guy’s bio are from several years back. Steve Bellone’s 2nd term just ran out, and he couldn’t run again because of term limits; the County Executive position is being taken over by a Republican. And Laura Curran, after 1 term as Nassau County Executive, has been replaced by Republican Bruce Blakeman.
For every 1 sign or mailing from Robert Zimmerman (the Dem in the 2022 race), there were 5 or 6 from George Santos. A small local newspaper reported on Santos’s lies during the campaign, but none of the major outlets picked it up, and the campaign decided that they should spend money elsewhere George Santos 2022 campaign - Wikipedia
