So, I have an XBox that my room mate modded for me (softmod and a 160GB hard drive). I later replaced the (quite nonfunctional) DVD drive with a new Samsung one.
So far, every game I have placed in it has worked fine (Well, Halo has worked fine). The problem is, I just got Republic Commando off of eBay, and it won’t go past the Lucasarts copyright screen. I’ve tried cleaning the disc with warm water and dishwashing soap, I’ve tried the toothpaste polishing trick, still won’t load past the copyright screen. I was, however, able to copy the DVD to the hard drive using XBox2DVD, but when loading from the disk drive, I had the same problem.
I rented another copy of the game from Hastings today, but I had the same identical thing happen (and now I’m out $6
)
On my room mate’s (also modded) XBox, we were able to copy Republic Commando onto the hard drive, so I wouldn’t think it was an issue with the XBox being softmodded.
Any idea on what the problem may be, and how I can fix it?
A minor correction: I used DVD2XBox, not XBox2DVD.
Anybody at all have any ideas? I’d really like to be able to play this game.
You copied it to your room mate’s XBox – does that mean it works on his box? Is your room mate using the same softmod and version? Is the Samsung a dedicated XBox drive, or something that you converted for XBox use? Can you throw back in your original hard drive and DVD drive and see if it works natively? Does it run off the same partition/directory in your room mate’s box? Does the DVD2XBox program automatically patch the default.xbe file or did you miss that step?
Also compare your room mate’s and your XBox version number – I think most of the replacement Dashboards show version information these days. The 1.6 Xbox’s seem to be trickier to softmod.
Hm… well, the DVD drive in the XBox was DOA, and the replacement is a faster Samsung model that was modified to work with the XBox. The original hard drive is sitting in a box in my room somewhere, so I can probably switch it out and try with that one if I have time later this week. I’ll ask my room mate about the XBox version number.
As for patching the xbe file, I have no idea. Usually I load up DVD2XBox, set the directory, start up the process, and go check my email. Most games I’ve done this with in the past worked fine.
I don’t know if it’s relevant, but I noticed that the link on the dashboard for going into the MS dashboard doesn’t seem to be selectable. Do you think this might be part of the problem?
Oh, and when I got it to work on my room mate’s XBox, it was a DVD from a different store, 6 months to a year ago.
