Republican National Convention 7/15/24-7/18/24 Milwaukee

I’ve been meaning to start this thread for a while now. It’s local for me and I don’t want to dump all the news about it into the Stupid Republican News thread.

I’ll start things off with the first thing attendees will see when they enter:

Charlie Sykes, for those that don’t know him, is (was?) a conservative radio personality. However, I assume he’s denouncing The Heritage Foundation, since he seems to be anti-Trump.

I’ve often wondered why Republicans hold their conventions in less-than-friendly cities, such as New York City in 2004. Sure, Wisconsin may be a swing state, but why not hold these events somewhere in the red South or some other deep-red region?

Well, in 2004, they were clearly trying to milk the remaining patriotic fervor left over after 9/11. Holding the convention in some place that’s already going to go for the party doesn’t make a lot of sense for the party that lost the last election.

Well, when they ban weapons, both concealed and open-carry, they can pretend its because of venue rules and not because it’s a good idea.

I don’t know this for sure, but I think a big part of the reason it’s being held here is because the city/county/state as well as a lot of private business spent a ton of money preparing for the 2020 DNC, which was going to be hosted here, but was cancelled due to covid. My assumption is that that played into us hosing the 2024 RNC. But that’s just speculation.

In MAGA America, RNC convention hoses you!

I find Sykes’ post ambiguous.

I think he meant that “Heritage Foundation wants to tell the delegates that this convention is owned by and controlled by Heritage Foundation and to remind the delegates they all should be be nice little führer followers and do as we tell you”.

But due to sloppy writing it could be read as “Heritage Foundation wants to tell the delegates that this convention is controlled by the delegates. Because Freedumb is what we stand for.”

Well, all cities are less-than-friendly to Republicans. Milwaukee voted 70-30 for Joe Biden in 2020.

Both the RNC and DNC have held their last few conventions in swing states, even though there’s no evidence that where parties host their nominating conventions has any impact on the election results. The important factors are identifying a city with the necessary security, transportation, entertainment, hotels and event space to accommodate 4-5 thousand delegates plus thousands more staff, activists, media, etc. As well as whatever incentives the bid cities put together to sweeten the deal.

Yeah they want to host it in a swing state, and so that generally means a state with Blue Island cities in a sea of rural red. But they can’t very well hold their convention in some podunk town of 2,000 people so they end up in enemy territory.

I believe it’s a given that one of the site selection criteria is ready access to abundant and world-class debauchery.

We know blue cities are the best for that stuff.

Here is the kind of thing we can look forward to if trump or the GOp wins-
DeSantis signs law that bans local municipalities from requiring heat breaks.

DeSantis signs law that bans local municipalities from requiring heat breaks

Watch out for carjackers.

A real man of the people.

84 of them, anyway…
US set heat death record in 2023. Florida had the 4th most..

And the argument will be that of course people need heat breaks but they should not be required - those in charge will just give the workers breaks out of the kindness of their hearts. Because that’s the way freedumb works.

Most importantly, the state level is the only level of government allowed to function. The real DeSantis goal (as bought and paid for by ALEC), is to essentially neutralize all county and city governments from having any ability to write ordnances of any nature or enforce them.

They want a two-level government: Fed & State.

And so it begins. This means Trump Force One will be on the ground in Milwaukee in the next 20 minute or so:

Edit: Looking at a flight tracker, there’s 757 with no tail number sitting at the air force base. Assuming that’s him, it’s odd that the helicopters are still in the air.

Trump will name his VP later today. CNN is reporting that it is not Rubio or Burgum.

The Hill reported that the finalists were Rubio, Burgum and Vance. It will be a big surprise if it’s not Vance.
