Not sure this warrants its own thread, but it was too good to not post – Texas Republican Congressman Van Taylor ended his reelection campaign because it came out that he had an affair with and paid hush money to a woman who is, “known as a former jihadist who was once married to a commander for the Islamic State.”
I guess ole Cal Cunningham can now say, “At least I didn’t fuck the ‘ISIS Bride.’”
Yes, although he was one of the few Republicans to vote in favor of creating the January 6 Commission. That earned him a contested primary, in which he had just fallen shy of avoiding a run-off. His runoff opponent will now be the Republican nominee in this solidly Republican district.
I am SO so curious about the back story to all this. (Not REALLY, but let’s play along.) It appears that at the time of the affair, he was in office. How does some former wife of a jihadist just happen to land in Plano, and just happen to run into the local Congressman, and just happen to end up in a fling, and just happen to get him to pay hush money, and just happen to provide details to the news?
It’s clear he’s an idiot for taking the bait, but could it be that he was targeted for his Jan 6 Commission vote?
So the member of a fanatical group bent on destroying American democracy had an affair with a member of a different type of group bent on destroying American democracy?
This is hilarious, but I don’t get why Self gets to be the nominee. He didn’t get 50%+1 of the votes, either. Seems like he should get to have a runoff with Suzanne Harp, the 3rd place loser. Whoever gets the nomination should have won 50%+1 in the primary. Instead of this nonsense, what if Taylor had been hit by a bus? Would that mean Self gets the nom? What if Self were driving the bus?
Yes. Under Texas election law, if a candidate withdraws, dies or otherwise become ineligible once the primary has advanced to a runoff, the remaining candidate becomes the nominee.
