‘Resident Evil’ has something in common with ‘The Hitcher’, other than being a somewhat gorey suspense/horror movie. They are both movies I liked that Roger Ebert gave a low rating.
See, usually I can trust Ebert’s reviews. He almost always agrees with me on movies, with only a few exceptions. Some movies that were critically panned that he liked are movies I enjoyed a lot too, like ‘Anaconda’. Ones he hates, I usually hate too.
One notable exception was ‘The Hitcher’, which is one of my favorite movies. When I was going through his archives I was surprised to see it got the rare 0 stars.
Now he’s done it to ‘Resident Evil’ as well. I think this is probably the best movie ever based on a video game. I don’t like it as much as ‘The Hitcher’, but I think it deserves at least 3 stars for being good at what it is. Yeah, it’s got it’s implausibilities and sometimes it forgoes logic to set up an interesting scene, but it’s a fun movie to watch.
Ebert and I often like the same movies, but I think he’s a dork. I think he likes and dislikes movies for the most idiotic reasons… Things that I know the movie makers didn’t give two thoughts about while making the movie.
Now that I think about it a lot of it has to do with racial crap. If a black man happened to be first to die, he would notice that and think he’s cool for bringing it up. I think his wife is black. Rush Hour 2, he bitched about Chris Tucker playing the race card to distract peoples attention. When you have to distract people… you do what works. He finds non-pc things to whine about… but that’s PART of the story. I bet he would be the first in line to protest lines being cut out of the re-release of E.T… Like when Elliot calls his brother “penis breath”… BUT WHAT ABOUT GAY BASHING… acting like “Penis Breath” was used as a negative way to bash his brother! Meaning he was calling his brother a gay…
