In the Dune (Frank Herbert) universe, it’s a man (I don’t THINK that women become Mentats) who, through rigorous training and drugs, has become an organic computer. Artificial intelligences/sentient machines are forbidden in this universe.
Mentat drugs in Fallout and Fallout 2 don’t just increase your science skill, they increase your intelligence and charisma, as well. Very handy when you want to pick up another NPC and you’re already at your limit and you don’t want to leave anyone behind.
I always keep a couple of packs of Mentats on hand. I think they are far more useful than Buffouts.
It is by will alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the juice of Sapho that thoughts acquire speed, the lips acquire stains. The stains become a warning. It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.
Did you ever notice that the ego is only a bit of consciousness swimming upon the ocean of dark things? I was in a Starbucks the other day, I prefer my own coffee but my niece dragged me along. I looked at my cup and thought, “We are an enigma unto ourselves.” Why is that?
I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.
“I must not have fun. Fun is the time-killer. Fun is for children, customers, and the help. I will forget fun. I will take a pass on it. And while it is going, I will turn a blind eye toward it. When fun is gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain—I, and my will to win. Damn, I’m good.”
Have you noticed that the bottles of sapho juice only come half full these days? And they’re so hard to open. I have to keep this drawer full of gadgets just to open them.
I so wish his barber would force him to trim those damned eyebrows. They drive me crazy, and not in a good way. Most of the old guys at my church have the eyebrows and earhair under control, but there is one old guy that sometimes sits in front of me. I can’t concentrate on anything with all those hairs poking out of his earlobes and the wild tangle that his brows have devolved into…they didn’t look like that twenty years ago!
Come to think of it, I’ve never understood the “lips become a warning” part. Does it mean a warning to others that you can outthink them? Or a warning to oneself not to become too deeply addicted to spice? (Because then you end up a big va-jay-jay mouthed worm stuck in an aquarium.)
The lips are a warning to others that you are a mentat who is accustomed to (and might be addicted to) sapho juice, which is NOT a spice derivative. Mentats can think rings around normal humans.
Spice addiction is indicated by the whites of the eyes becoming blue.
I’m no Shadout Mapes, but I think this thread would be more appropriate in Cafe Society, rather than MPSIMS. Moving it there, with the help of the Spacing Guild.
