Resources on Shintoism

One of the characters in a comic I have planned is intended to be a Shinto miko. However, unlike all Japanese comics and having this simply be one of the random outfits that one can put a character in, I would like to actually have her and her families daily routine as well as how Shinto beliefs would effect their outlook be important aspects of the character.

I haven’t looked recently (admittedly) but I was never able to google up any good sites that provided more than some of the Shinto creation stories and such (which are, in my understanding, relatively minor aspects of the religion as a day-to-day thing.)

Ideally, I would be able to get a good idea of the various spirits they believe in (like the little fox shrines all about), when they hold matsuri, how they make a living, whether they hold sermons, and such. If anyone knows any good books…

Thank you,
-SR

Charles Tuttle books of Vermont publishes books on Japan, including some on Shinto. I’m not sure if it’s what you want, but their stuff is more detailed than most.
