Restarting a failed download in Firefox. This worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

<happy,happy,happy dance> It worked!!!

I left a 2 gig download going last night. I had my auto shutdown set for 2 hours. Normally plenty of time to let the dl finish. Well, this time the stinking thing didn’t finish. 1.6 Gig of my quota lost.

Firefox doesn’t restart downloads. :smack: I have no idea why. The piece of crap software just doesn’t.

Google found a solution. Just tried it and it worked like a charm.

First confirm that you have the .part file. If you were downloading Example.zip there will be a file called Example.part

Start the download in a new folder. Very, very important to do this in a new folder. Otherwise you’ll wipe out the previous .part file

Immediately go to downloads page and pause the dl.

Copy the original .part file into the new folder. Click replace when prompted by windows.

go back to downloads page and resume the dl.

Did I mention it worked? Saving me 2 hours and 1.6 gig of my quota?

You can also get a Download Manager extension, such as DownThemAll, which have more controls.

I recall back in the bad old 56k modem days that downloads failed all the time because the connection dropped. It would take 12 hours to grab a half gig on a 56k modem. Something would always cause the line to drop. Keeping a connection going that long was nearly impossible.

Usually IE 4 would restart the dl no problem.

I rarely have a failed download with DSL. But, my usenet server has been weird lately. Sometimes my dl speeds drop ridiculously low. Normally I can grab a 2 gig zip file in about an hour to hour 15 mins with DSL. But last night I must of been getting very slow speeds.
