.We have a local up-scale Hamburger place with parking slots less than 7 feet from their wall. There’s a row of window booths along that wall. I noticed last night some car just sat in one of those parking spots with the headlights shining into those booths. The people eating didn’t seem to react. I was in the middle of the restaurant and it didn’t effect my table.
here’s a photo. parking to the right and the dining area windows.
Should people kill their headlights in this type of situation? I even wait to turn mine on until I’m actually backing out of the parking slot. I kill my lights the moment I start to turn into one of those slots. Trying to minimize the glare into their dining area.
Are people desensitized to light glare these days? Is it anything for motorists to consider when they park next to a business?
Maybe I should just ignore my headlights and pretend they are shining at a blank wall? That’s what the guy last night did.
My headlights are set to automatic and turn off when the engine is off, so I don’t really pay much attention to them. But OTOH, if I was just sitting in a parking space, and knew I would be there for awhile with the engine running, I would turn off my headlights regardless.
If it bothered the customers, the restaurant would put some tint or frosting on the windows. Let it be their worry, not yours. No need for you to douse the lights.
These people are unthoughtful jackasses that are only about one step above motorcycle riders that show up in a hoard somewhere and keep running their dick substitutes for another 10 minutes after they have arrived.
Yes, people should turn their headlights off, or just use their parking lights, when they’re standing for long periods of time. Being blinded by bright lights is extremely annoying to people who might consider using their tire iron for something other than removing lug nuts.
Or you could ask the offender to turn their lights off.
I’d love to but my car has either full headlights or daytime running lights (depending on ambient light) on whenever the car is running with no way to turn them off. I’ll turn the car off as soon as I can or drive off as soon as possible but sometimes you need to run the car for a while before you can move (defrost during Canadian winters and such).
Whether I own a motorcycle is neither here nor there. Apparently, you live in an area with large groups of motorcyclists whose parking habits displease you. I’m simply suggesting you will get better results by confronting them than you will by anonymously talking silly shit here.
I suppose if they think of it, and it’s a capability their car has, they should turn off their lights. But really, this is the restaurant’s responsibility to solve the problem, either through better design or window tinting.
Perhaps. But you have two conflicting goals. Windows that are low enough that you can actually see out when seated vs windows high enough that they block any light from the cars (aka walls).
I’ll say this. Many people who drive up to such a place aren’t keeping the lights on because they don’t give a shit that they are shinning lights on people. They are doing it because the thought never crossed their i am in my own little universe minds.
Which is how much inconsiderate behavior arises in society for that matter.
The bigger problem is that when you point out such behavior, many people get butthurt about it rather than going “my bad, won’t do that again” (see previous few posts for an example).
I haven’t had to worry about turning on and off my car lights in so long, when they do get turned off I can forget to turn them back on. Most NYC streets are pretty well lit, so it takes until others have flashed their hi-beams a half-dozen times for me to figure out I’m the offender.
So yes, I would be the proverbial “unthoughtful jackass”. Fortunately, I can’t think of many places nearby where that would be an issue, and certainly none that I frequent.
The restaurant should take the responsibility to make sure that headlights aren’t a problem but it doesn’t hurt to be a little aware and cut off your headlights. However, I wouldn’t think most people realize this could be a problem.
This is one of my pet peeves at the coffee shop I frequent in the AM. Except in summer, I often arrive there when it’s dark and people will drive up, leave their lights on and then go in to get coffee. Meanwhile, I have these spotlights shining in my eyes the whole time. I don’t expect people to be super-vigilant and rush to turn off the lights, but don’t fucking leave them on on purpose while you mosey in to get your coffee! The place has floor to ceiling windows everywhere, so it’s not like these folks can’t see what they’re doing.
