The Heights, annexed by Houston over 100 years ago, prides itself on quaint houses & no liquor. An election now allows stores to sell beer & wine. The Kroger just outside the border improved its selection, anticipating competition. And it added a beer & wine bar–something the Heights stores can’t match.
The nearest WalMart is not far; it was highly controversial, although it didn’t replace anything of architectural value. I’m one of those Target snobs, but I think there’s a McDonald’s inside. The attached center includes some more interesting food chains, a Cost Plus & a Sprouts–so it’s a useful addition. Houston has no zoning; it could be worse.
