Restoration of 100 year old pressed tin ceiling

I’ve recently purchased a house that’s approximately 100 years old. One of its features is a very nice pressed tin ceiling in the living room. Unfortunately it has been painted a very unattractive colour (we call it baby-poo brown). Apart from the colour, the ceiling is in very good condition.

Before I tackle this particular task I am trying to find some advice on any issues I need to be aware of in the restoration particularly in stripping back the old paint, cleaning it up and applying the new paint. For example, I know I can’t use water based paints as they promote rust.

Can anyone point me towards a website, book etc that would be useful.

I’ve done a Google search but have not come up with anything useful (I could, however, be using the wrong terms)

I can’t vouch for this personally, but I did find this when I googled on “tin ceiling” cleaning.

I’m sure some other Dopers will be along with more advice soon.
