Resurrection of Online Texas hold 'em tournaments for Dopers only (revised thread)

right now I’m on AIM. I guess I can probably find my way onto Yahoo, having a games account, I think it can work on the IM client, too?

I know and trust AIM, but would probably be willing to do another as necessary.

I have AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) also. If we all have it (its free to download) we should use it tomorrow night and make it the official IM service of the group.

My AIM ID is: xry88

I have Yahoo Messenger and not AIM.

Haj

We obviously all don’t have the same messenger service Haj. Some people are obviously going to have to download something so we can all be on the same page with this. If its too much of an inconvenience, we’ll just scrap the idea.

Let’s scrap the idea. I don’t think that there’s a way to send a message to a whole group of people with any of the popular IM services. If we all can’t see what’s being said, it won’t be a fair playing field. We’ll just deal with the IM service that comes with the pokerroom software.

Maybe in the future we can use a private chatroom. I think there are free ones out there. There won’t be enough time to set that up by tomorrow night though.

I just started downloaded AIM, and I’ll let you know that I’m quite consistent with the moniker Yeticus Rex. It wasn’t too hard to do, just a little time consuming amongst other things I’m doing on the computer.

I did download the pokerroom software on my work computer (yes, I’m STILL at work…doing payroll)…I won’t have time to download it at home until I finish work tomorrow (must leave early enough), hopefully, without the family interrupting my plans, I should be up and running at home.

Unfortunately, I have other commitments tomorrow night, but I’ll try to make the next one.

Sounds like a lot of fun though.

I constructed a buddy list with a new group name ‘SDMB Poker’ and added the 5 available AIM accounts (me being the 6th) from this thread…can’t you put all of our names into that group and message them instantaneously? (providing that they are online with AIM.) My noobness shows through again.

My aim screen name is hitekburrito, go ahead and add me if you need to.

Already did…on my work computer.

I just realized something from another thread…I have not been able to download much of anything on my home computer because I have some pesky spyware that interfereres with my downloading from certain sites that have popup windows. You may or may not see me tomorrow night because of this…wish me luck.

I’d like to jump in at the last minute. I’d love to play, but being an online poker noob, I’d like to watch a couple games first, if possible.

Really, I’d be more comfortable with a few newbie’s like myself getting together and practicing . Is there intrest in a newbie table for a bit? Maybe a few of us can get together and play a bit to figure out the software and the general flow of the game.

Otherwise, if there is room, I’d like to play. If not no biggie. But no making fun of the newbie if I play.

No, but you can send a chat invitation and have everyone be in the room, assuming they accept.

Few things:

  1. You don’t have to download anything to play on PR. It has a Java-based online client.
  2. In a ring game you can sit and watch after you go broke, at least for a while. I think after a certain amount of time, at least at a public table, you get booted but at a private table I don’t think that applies.
  3. PR has table chat so I’m unclear as to why we would need an IM program at all for this, as long as everyone knows when the game is and the table name. I do want to let you know that I have periodic problems with the table chat ceasing to function and I’m not the only one, so if I’m nattering away and suddenly stop it’s probably a problem with the chat. My AIM ID is ottosdmb.

My AIM ID is, er, well: CapnPitt

Mine is NorthernNanook(shocking I know). I also have MSN IM if that helps any.

Cool! I didn’t realize you could create a chat room. Lets do it. Like I was saying about the chat included in Pokerroom, the window is very small and chat is rolling by very quickly because Pokerroom’s commentator is constantly commentating. It will be easier to help players who aren’t sure what to do in an AIM chat room. Especially since Pokerroom doesn’t give you much time to make a decision when its your turn to act. Scrolling through Pokerroom’s little chat window and ignoring the commentator will just be a waste of time.

So far I have Otto (ottosdmb), Yeticus Rex (Yeticusrex), CapnPitt (CapnPitt), Nanook of the North Shore (NorthernNanook) and hightechburrito (hitekburrito) on my AIM buddy list.

I’m Deimosan on AIM.

Sorry all, but I’ve been called into work tonight. Good Luck.

I don’t know about AIM but you can create a conference on Yahoo Messenger and have only invited guests inside.

If anyone’s interested, I created a Straight Dope group in PR’s Pokah! forum. Go to Pokah!, then Groups, then Go to Group Search and search for group name Straight Dope to apply for membership. It affords us another way of passing group messages and we can also have discussion threads there if we want.
