ABC has been running previews for several weeks. Older couple answers the door and theres a 5 year old kid claiming to be their son. Who had actually died decades earlier. The kid asks, whats green and flies a 100 mph? Frog in a blender the older guy replies. A joke he had often told his deceased son.
I’m curious to see what direction the show takes. Is it a drama focusing on these peoples lives? Horror with some kind of alien conspiracy? A criminal fraud of some kind?
It’s a new series. I hope it’s good. I’m excited to see how this develops. On at 8 central time
It is starting really well. I like the interesting ways this child’s return effects the other characters. Especially the minister and his faith. I hope the series continues focusing on drama and doesn’t get too far into supernatural or alien stuff.
Apparently all the returns will be in this one town or the surrounding area? Ep 2 should be different since there has already been one person returned from death. There won’t be as much skepticism. I’m sure the mystery of what is happening will deepen.
Still No spoilers. The Biblical resurrection story is already well known.
The Minister mentioned in his sermon that Jesus only came back for a limited time. I wonder if that’s foreshadowing the character’s fate in this show? Is Tommy returned temporarily or will he grow up? It would be devastating if Tommy dies or disappears again. It would destroy his parents losing him a second time.
Preview for next week reveals the next person that returns. Loving this show more and more.
Didn’t have a heartbeat until he realized that it was weird that he didn’t have one. That leads me to believe that either he knows he’s inhuman or there’s something inhuman in him, which he may not be conscious of, that is also aware and is trying to hide.
I liked it so far but we’ll see if it can stay interesting and on the air.
Given my semi-serious sneering disdain for network TV, I hadn’t even heard about this show. I very much enjoyed “Les Revenants”, though, so I may have to give it a shot.
Jacob.
As for the heartbeat, I thought that when there was no heartbeat, it was because the stethoscope was turned off? It was like, oooh, he doesn’t have a heartbeat- oh, wait, yes he does.
I like the smart twists and turns in the story. Like making us think there’s no heartbeat and then there is one. Or making us think the guy in the hoodie was a threat to Jacob. But instead he’s another guy back from the dead.
I wonder how much proof will be needed before the authorities accept that dead people are coming back alive? DNA tests are pretty conclusive. Jacob knows things that an imposter could never know. At some point it will have to be believed that this is happening. It’s like Torchwood Miracle Day. It quickly was proven and became an accepted plot point that people had stopped dying.
Once it’s established and accepted the dead are coming back. Then the story can really explore how it effects the other characters and focus on why it’s happening.
My wife, Mrs 2sense RN, BSN is watching it right now. She says it’s possible that the stethoscope wasn’t used correctly but interprets it as I did (without me spoiling it) that there was no heartbeat at first.
She also thinks it’s significant that the church is entirely white even the pews and blank white walls.
Thanks for the link, aceplace57. I think I’ll try this show for a while.
One small and possibly pointless question:
when drunken sheriff hit the effigy, I could decide if he 1) hit the image of child because his daughter isn’t his bio-child, or 2) hit the image of the child because Jacob came back but not his dead wife. What did you think was the meaning of that scene?
Still to early to tell what direction will take. I like the focus on the families’ reactions and the early investigation. I knew they’d introduce a bad returnee character. I’m not sure where that will lead. I found it interesting that the returnee father’s son was getting bad vibes from this guy. He wouldn’t have noticed anything dangerous about his dad as a kid. We get returnee three according to next weeks previews.
Seems odd no one has tweeted about dead people returning. Or the local tv news reporting the story. I can’t imagine this story not making the National news.
I’m not sure about the sheriff’s motives. He seemed to admit (to his daughter) that he had suspicions about his wife in the second episode. I think the sheriff will be quite a complicated character. Theres this feeling of repressed anger and danger whenever he’s on screen.
I like how everyone lives in a perfectly decorated and appointed home. Trendy furniture arranged tastefully. It’s almost like a Restoration Hardware commercial. And what town doesn’t have a priest who could double as a male model? He looks like he’s about 30, max, but he has to be more like 40 to have been Jacob’s friend.
Aside from that, it’s still kind of interesting. No shocker that they only showed the reaction of the folks opening the casket but not the casket itself. I know this is based on a similar work of fiction, but I’m reminded of the chapter in The Martian Chronicles where the Martian guy appears to Earth settlers as whomever they lost and are missing.
They moved the story forward a lot this week. I wondered how long it would be before they found where that guy had been digging. They were kind of slow finding the murdered guy.
I question whether people would actually ban that mom and her kid from church? This is set in modern times? Seems pretty archaic to question whether the kid is from heaven or hell. The murder and will direct suspicion towards dead dad and will make it even more difficult for all the returnees. It confirms the towns fears that these returned people are unnatural and dangerous.
I’m still enjoying the show. Curious to see which direction it takes next.
