Flew 4 space shuttle missions and also was a Navy fighter pilot. Married to Gabrielle Giffords .
Good – unless there are skeletons in the closet, he’s likely to be a strong candidate.
Fun fact: He has spent 54 days in space. While that seems like a lot he is a distant second in his own family. His twin brother Scott has spent 520 days in space (a record at the time).
There’s got to be a relativity joke in there somewhere.
NASA actually used them to do a twin study.
There was some old SF story (Heinlein?) with telepathic twins, one of whom went on an interstellar space trip while one stayed on Earth, using their abilities for instant communication. The one that went up to high velocities for years aged much more slowly. So, Scott is every so slightly younger than Mark now, not that it’s measurable.
Mark is actually younger than Scott (assuming for the sake of the textbook problem that they were born at exactly the same moment). The general relativistic effects are larger than the special relativistic effects, but in the opposite direction.
as he says in the video he had 2 very dangerous jobs but his wife was the one who almost died on the job.
According to The Onion, Mark Kelly may be being…uh, used here:
Heh. Somebody on The Onion staff must’ve seen The Hidden.
Don’t blame me: I voted for Kodos.
Good?
I mean, I don’t even live in AZ and I am still fucking pissed that Martha McSally got that damn Senate seat to begin with. If this gets her closer to losing for real this time, then I’m down.
For all the hero worship for the so-called maverick John McCain, he was always party first. If he would have resigned earlier, his seat would have been up in the last election. I’m sure his internal polling showed that it could be two Democratic pickups in AZ and thus hung on to allow the governor to select his replacement who must be a Republican.
Well I do live in Arizona, and as a lifelong Republican who voted for the candidate who actually WON the election - - I am highly disappointed that the loser of that election is in the same job and even in the same class as the winner - Sinema and McSally were sworn in days apart at most. On the other hand, except for McSally being a more obvious supporter of Trump, the two women have a pretty similar voting record in the lower house. I know many Democrats in central Arizona complained that they had a choice between two Republicans in that race.
There are many John McCain supporters who believe Grant Woods (former Attorney General of AZ and former McCain Chief of Staff) should have been appointed to the seat but I am told the state Republican Party hates him as much as they hated McCain. For those of you who believe McCain was always party first – he was far from the beloved son of the party.* A fairly high powered Republican operative told me the state party refused to even consider Woods because they wanted someone more loyal to the party than to their ideals. Sort of ironic that McSally benefited from being in the ‘good old boys club’ except in this case the good old boys are not all boys – just blindly loyal to the capital R after their names.
As for Kelley, I admire him for opening himself up to this process. I do wish he could just apply for the job and be elected or not – but I am pretty sure the right is going to heap as much horseshit on him as they can. They would embrace him in a minute if he would run as a Republican and drop this Second Amendment bullshit, but I fear their . . . not terribly complex thought process will make them hate him (begin Jules voice): “… with great vengeance and furious anger…” (/Jules voice). I am sorry that a good and accomplished guy has to endure the blind hatred and personal attacks he is going to face just to have the opportunity to do the most good he can do with the remaining years of his life.
*On a personal note, the number of Republicans of my personal acquaintance (many of them related to me) who wished McCain would appear in their own driveways on fire – just so they could avoid pissing on him to put out the fire was staggering. Enough of these “Christian” characters mentioned it (at every opportunity) that I got the idea they were dispersing water bottles to each other just to ensure they would HAVE to urinate- but could deny any benefit of the act to McCain. As someone who attended a Bible College in their youth, and has made serious studies of Christendom over two decades since then, as someone who sincerely embraced Christian Theology, Tenants, and Rituals and who diligently sought understanding of same – I have to say, some of these faithful may not fully understand the message of their beloved Jesus. (No insults expressed or implied, the above is a factual observation only. I am not interested in a flame war on this or any topic.)
Same day, actually, but Sinema is designated the senior senator. And they are, as Wiki notes, “the first Senate colleagues in history to serve together after running against each other the prior year”: Martha McSally - Wikipedia
Nitpick - it’s “tenets.”
You can embrace a Christian tenant too.
Thank you for the correctionElendil’s Heir, I would have tried to convince you I was speaking of a believer who rented space from me, but ElvisL1ves beat me to the joke.
Heh. Better not if he or she is already married.
