I’m not sure what changes you made Marley but my first thought upon seeing the thread was “Wow, talk about refreshingly honest”
Do you think the desire is a natural trait for you? Were you born this way? Are you trying to legalize spam?
It was originally “Hi I’m new,” and it’s been getting progressively worse since the thread started. Same with the sig.
Of couse it’s natural. Did you just choose to search with Google? No, you were born wanting to Google. Animals spam each other all the time. When the rooster crows and the humming birds sing, they’re spamming one another. Dolphins and chimpanzees have been knows to sell each other herbal remedies and hair removal products, and when zookeepers in Atlanta taught sign language to Koko the gorilla, her most commonly used phrase was “One rule: Obey.” All I’m asking for is the same respect as everybody else.
See post #58.
If spamming is right, I don’t want to be wrong!
Maybe he and a Bob-Bot will be making Road to Redmond soon. Along with a Dorothy-bot, of course.
This thread seems like a great place to tell you about the guy I graduated from high school with (1965) who had a bright red hard-top convertable Thunderbird.
A few years after graduation I ran into him and he said he sold the T-bird to buy a station wagon.
His girl friend had a world class butt though.
Are you in favor of states allowing Spammers to marry?
That was a theory proposed by someone, but it’s supposedly never been executed in reality. Consider the presence of so many free porn sites that do not require captcha verification for access.
There’s two types of forum spammers: bots and humans. The most popular bot is a program called xRumer. It can solve weak vBulletin captchas through basic pattern matching; for example, a certain letter will always look the same if it’s in the same spot in the captcha. I can always identify an xRumer bot because there will always be fiove opr six hits from the same IP on the registration page in rapid succession. Thwarting xRumer is easy; block the most popular web-based free email providers in Eastern Europe (mail.ru, pochta.ru, and many others), use some different fonts in the captcha generator, or use a different human validation system like ReCaptcha or a list of preselected questions. The Stop Forum Spam plugin for vBulletin and IPB is excellent for stopping bots.
The humans: basically seven subcategories:
-
Those who work for a search engine optimization company. Most are in India, Pakistan, Vietnam and the Philippines, although a few can be encountered from IPs in Russia and Eastern Europe.
-
Chinese spammers usually employed for the party that they’re advertising (WoW gold, fake sneaker sales, etc.)
-
Nigerian cell phone and electronic goods spammers. Most are on satellite or UK IPs.
-
Guerilla marketers/astroturfers trying to promote a band, celebrity, movie, TV show, video game or something else in the popular media. Most will have IPs in southern California.
-
Referral spammers
-
Those promoting their own web sites.
-
Cause spammers: usually right-wing glurge and religious preaching (I’ve seen Christian, Muslim and Buddhist).
There’s a ton of different ways to battle the human spammers; country blocks, proxy blocks, and keyword and bbCode triggering for new users among them.
Please, please Marley, post a running list of titles and sigs for us. Please?
No way!
Obviously, more than a few of us are highly amused - the view count is impressive!
Thanks, Marley!
That’s funny, because we’ve had a few spammers come here and say they’re offering a place to download xRumer. That’s rather recursive.
The title has changed from “Hey I’m new” to “Hey I’m a new spammer” to “Hey I’m a new spammer!” to “Hey I’m a spammer!” to “Hey I was a spammer and then I got the banhammer!” to “As the spammer who just got banned!” to “Ask the spammer who just got banned!” to this.
There’s no record of the edits to the signature. I think it’s gone like this:
to
to
to
to the current version.
No, to catch a bigger live one attached to a bag of gold (attractiveness level otherwise not guaranteed, posession of a working brain considered irrelevant) with your bigger boobs.
Will ghost spammers be a hot halloween costume next year?
It has to be WOW gold.
What, no love for Mata Hari? That was a great early search bot …
Galldang you. I was coming in with that joke!
This may be a better post for ATMB, and I may repost there depending on what response I get here.
Instead of deleting spam threads, why not lock them and throw them into a freakshow forum? That way Dopers can go in to point and laugh when their favorite forum is a little slow.
Why should the mods have all the fun denigrating spammers and their efforts?
I’ll even volunteer to mod it. Other forum mods could move and hide the threads and ban the poster. I’d go in and remove any links and unhide it for the amusement of all.
Go ahead and start the thread if you want. But two reasons I can think of that it might not happen: seeing one spam thread once in a while might be unique, seeing all of them would get old fast. Very few of them are really entertaining or even remotely interesting. And this one was subtle, so there was something to have fun with. A long list of iPhone accessory prices isn’t as fun. And we really don’t want these people to successfully get their spam out there.
I suppose I could expand my hypothetical mod duties to include screening for content that at least borders on interesting or amusing. So the iPhone accessory lists and generic v!4gr4 would never make it out of the bit bucket black hole.
And as far as successful, without links or some way to get to their products, they’re pretty much as effective as Chick tracts.
nm. Not as good an idea as it was at first glance. I blame caffeine deficiency.
Do you support the death penalty for Internet spamming? For identity fraud? For 419 scams? Are you willing to volunteer for capital punishment? Are you now or have you ever been a spambot?
