Revenant, The

Gotcha - I just reread what I wrote and noticed that it could literally read “legless” and wanted to clarify for future historians and archivists…

I just watched it on Amazon Prime over the weekend. Cinematically it was incredible. I thought the best actor of the movie was Tom Hardy. Leo was good, but his best actor Oscar wasn’t for this movie as a stand alone accomplishment.

Thing is, the movie was based on an actual guy who was actually mauled (and lived).

The movie took lots of liberties with the story (adding a son, for example), but the basic fact - of being horribly mauled, left for dead, and nonetheless surviving - actually happened.

I guess they added the son to make his revenge quest reasonable to the audience. Being left for dead after that mauling with a days long hike ahead through 2 ft of snow over a mountain all while being chased by Indians isn’t something you can really blame his crew for doing. Needed a loved one murdered to sell it.

I was underwhelmed both with Leo’s acting and the story. Some great scenes though.

We watched it over the weekend. This is the first Leonardo film I have sat through…ever. I had to be diplomatic in the watching as everyone knows my disdain for Leo. I was picking out flaws and goofs in the whole movie with out even trying. Hypothermia much?

Yeah, the wife and I were both pretty baffled how casually they strolled through freezing mountain rivers. There really weren’t any waterproof boots and leggings back then. Oh, but he did have to breath on his fingers a couple times.

Leonardo DiCaprio went over waterfalls in a freezing river after being scattered, smothered, covered and raped by a bear and losing body parts and shot and stabbed repeatedly, and I think he was on fire at time, and he survived just fine.

Yeah I guess walking in mountain snow runoff rivers was the least of his problems. Lol. But still, it’s freezing fucking cold, maybe walk BESIDE the river instead of down the middle?

Apparently a big part of the real guy’s motive was - he wanted his favorite rifle back. He never actually took “revenge” on anyone; he forgave the one fellow, and when he caught up to the other, the guy who had his rifle, he had enlisted in the army; so he contented himself with getting his gun back.

Yeah, the fact that there was no real “there” there to the story made me decide to not watch the film, after I read the Wikipedia article about Hugh Glass.

My favorite “lol wut” moment was when he had to cauterize a hole in his neck that was so bad he was breathing out of it. Kinda made an earlier scene when Tom Hardy was suffocating him a little confusing.

Also, I’m so totally sick of watching people on horses casually shoot bad guys off their horses. Leo’s blowing Indians away and not even reloading that old-timey flintlock gun which I thought was a labor-intensive process with a flint and gunpowder, etc, that wasn’t even reliable to shoot at all if it was raining or snowing.

SPOILER ALERT…

We (wife and I) just saw the movie, we Redboxed it. The only good thing I can say about it is the cinematography was good.

The movie sucked. A simplistic story of revenge. It was too much Fear Factor, trying to shock the audience with moments of wow! or eww that’s gross! or brutal bear attack! or can we see more saliva frothing from the mouth?

It sucked. Waste of time. For any movie, start with giving me a good story that I can care about. Not this one. After 20-30 minutes I asked my wife, What does the word revenant mean, anyway. I had to look it up and once I did, at that moment, I realized the movie was a simple story of him coming back from deadly injury to exact revenge - a pathetic story line that does not creat any compelling aspects to it.

Okay, a second good thing to say: Thank you, Redbox! Redbox saved me a lot of money. I’m glad we didn’t pay $$ to ee thi in the theater$.

I like DiCaprio and think he is one of the greats, not just of today, but when his career is done if he keeps doing great works he’ll be one of the greats of all time. But if you want to see good DiCaprio work then I suggest Blood Diamond. Stay away from this movie, it sucks.

Oh yeah, one more thing, did I say this movie sucks?

Saw it last night on cable. I agree with those who say: nice scenery, boring movie. I kept thinking I was watching a Terrence Malick film, and I say that in a bad way.

I’ve seen bits and pieces of it and it has yet to impress me. A very dark movie, full of violence in a dark way, and as another poster mentioned, too much revenge.
But recently I did catch the bear attack. Almost too realistic for me.

Just watched it last night. It took a long time to get anywhere, and then the ‘revenge’ part lasted five minutes.

Beautiful cinematography, though.
