"Reverence for Heavens" Neurological Response

A while ago (where I can’t remember) I read something about a neurological response that occurs when we raise our eyes up to look at the sky, which some believe induces a feeling of reverence, which in turn may be responsible for the early belief that God (or the gods) reside in heaven above. Anybody know anything about this?

Dunno. Are you talking about the “we’re hard-wired to believe in God” thing?

Duck, no. I don’t belive it has to do with God per se. The reponse may well result in feelings of contenment or happiness in general. I’m merely saying that a manifestation of this response might have been a belief in a higher power in early man.

I don’t know what the OP referred to. There are some interesting reflexes that have to do with looking up, however.

My favorite is the “photo-snutatory response.” This occurs when you come out of a dark environment (a cave?)into bright sunlight.

There is a tickling sensation in the nose, usually followed by a sneeze…This is thought to be protective to the eyes, as the sneeze is associated with a blink. But why the need to sneeze, when a simply blink reaction would suffice?
