Rgp lens sliding down when i blink?

This is driving me crazy. My fourth fitting. The rgp lens slides up with my lid when I BLINK then slide down. The right one especially. I can tell when I play volleyball if I look up to spike it will “flicker” and temporarily I can’t see so this messes me up.

My Dr said said this is normal because eyelids keep the lens in place but after researching online I think it’s too loose and he wanted to get rid of me after the third fitting when I read people get 6-7 fittings.

Please help! Thank you. New member here 🙋

This may not help because I’ve been wearing RGPs for years so I just may not be seeing it, but my take is, this will keep happening, but you will get used to it.

I did not have many fittings. In fact I only remember one. But it really seems like I could see the sliding, and now I can’t. Observation in a mirror indicates the lens is shifting minutely when I blink, but I just can’t even notice it any more.

How long have you been wearing them? It may resolve.

You don’t want them too tight, because then it’s hard to get them out. (I always have a little suction cup. Hardly ever need it, but when I do, I’m in no mood to go out and find one.)

It only happens when I look up really quick then then down or any sudden eye movement. It’s really obvious on the right the left is a lot better. I’ve been wearing them for 2mo about

For those not in the know, RGP means rigid gas-permeable. Contact lenses.

I was prescribed RGP lenses because I had such a high level of astigmatism in my right eye. The suction under the contact lens actually temporarily changed the shape of my lens (in my eye) to correct for the astigmatism in that eye.

My experience with them was horrible. I had the problem with the lenses moving EVERY time I blinked. I would blink, then I would not be able to see until I blinked again and again, until the lens centered itself. That lasted about two seconds, when I blinked again.

Without realizing it, I trained myself to only blink about 50% of the way, which meant that my natural lubrication (tears) was not being properly distributed over the entire surface of my eye. That led to chronic dry eyes, which led to an addiction to eyedrops.

Then, there were haloes. Driving at night was adventuresome because all of the street lights, all of the advertising lights, and all of the oncoming traffic lights had significant haloes.

One day, I somehow mixed them up and could not tell them apart (the little black dot on the right lens had eroded away (probably from all that blinking!)). That’s when I stopped using them.

For years, they tried to fit me with something that would be comfortable and they never succeeded. After a while I just told them that seeing well was not worth putting up with RGP lenses. Toroidal lenses also do not work for me, because they don’t realign themselves the way they’re supposed to.

I gave up entirely on RGP when I realized a subconscious habit I’d developed: instead of turning my eyes to look at something, I’d turn my whole head. The risk of knocking the lenses loose was so high that I’d literally learned to stop moving my eyes. How ridiculous is that?

OP, it may be worth going through a few more fittings to see how much it improves, but there’s a significant minority of the population who simply cannot wear these things no matter how much effort is put into the fit.

Also, if there’s a need for RGP, make sure doctors are looking at any underlying causes and all of your options. For me, it was keratoconus and cornea transplants were the only real solution, but I was seeing a specialist for years who was convinced that it was a last resort. When I moved and saw someone new, his first comment was “Why didn’t you have transplants ten years ago?!” While I know my story is statistically unlikely, it does highlight the value of a second opinion.

I just have high astigmatism. Are they just not fitted right then? So what I’m experiencing like you did, of not wanting to move my eyes because they go out of Center but instead my whole head isn’t normal? So I should get them refitted?
