I’m just curious, but, I’ve seen new places like superduperclub.com and the like sprouting up with unbelievably low prices for DVD’s. How in the heck are they able to charge so low? Who do they buy DVD’s from and what price are THEY getting them for?
My only experience of buying cheap DVDs has been on eBay, but many of the dealers there are also selling online; in ascending order of price, the DVDs on offer are typically:
-Bootleg
-Foreign versions (although they may have an English soundtrack
-Unpackaged disc-only
-‘Rental only, not for resale’
-The genuine article, presumably being sourced at an advantageous discount because of bulk purchase.
I think this might be where you have to join the society, and get the first DVD’s for $1 each, or whatever, and then have to buy 4 more or something, at a ‘standard’ price, which presumedly is more than the usual sale price in shops.
Actually, I don’t think i’ve seen many of this sort of thing for DVD’s in particular, but for books, but I suspect that similar things work for DVD’s too.
Another ‘trick’ seems to be that you have to opt-out of getting the ‘editors choice’, sending off a letter, or such like in order not to get that, assuming sufficient people won’t remember, or be bothered to do this.
I’ve just looked up this website, for the ‘Britannia CD Music Club’:
http://www.bookclubsuk.com/britannia-music-club.html
They seem to operate similarly to how I’ve described above, and sell books, CDs, and DVDs.
I checked out the site you mentioned and didn’t see anyhting like “unbelievably low prices.” On the “new releases/comedy” page, I see recent releases like “Cheaper by the Dozen” and “American Wedding” listed for 19.99 – not the lowest price you’ll find on the net.
They have a bunch of older titles for less than ten dollars, but some comparison will show that these prices aren’t substantially different than what you’ll find anywhere else – for example Analyze That (8.99) or Boys on the Side (5.99). Videos and DVDs of medicore films with no shelf life will be remaindered – ie, sold by the mabufacturer at cost to dispose of inventory.
