What makes you say they aren’t ghettos?
Not challenging, just asking.

I honestly can’t think of why you’d consider them to be beyond “ooh there are foreign people there”. When I moved to Sweden I lived in Kista, which is exactly one subway stop from Husby, where all this started. I also worked in Kista for about five years. My ex-girlfriend (of 9.5 years)'s family lived in Helenelund. Look show close these places are together:
According to the English Wikipedia page (here I’ve lived in two places where there has been rioting. Neither of them are ghettos. I live in one right now and have seen absolutely nothing, leading me to believe that a lot of the reporting has been somewhat exaggerated.
In other news, I was out with some Portuguese people last night at a Portuguese society thing. The Portuguese news were there because of the riots and, well, due to a lack of things to report on they ended up recording where I was. Apparently I’ve been seen on the Portuguese news.
Oh and there have also been allegations of the tabloids paying people to burn cars. Here’s Google translated versions of the original allegation and the follow-up:
Edited to add:
I’ve also walked drunkenly through Husby because I fell asleep on the last subway and ended up in Akalla (Kista-Husby-Akalla is the end of that branch of the blue line). Absolutely no issues at all.
Thanks for your response, but I’m still not sure why you’re insisting they aren’t ghettos and the Wikipedia link never says that either.
Also, I’m a little leery of the Wikipedia article since it drops the line “Police arrested so that Swedish civilians for trying to defend their property” in there with no cite other than some right-wing American website.
*Latinos dont buy into victimization and tend to integrate and advance in the culture ala Euro immigrants in the 19th century.

This is fact free speculation on your part. I liked fairy tales too, but I outgrew them.

First impressions?
Damn Muslims. Never should have let them into the country
There is no earthly reason for allowing any sizable number of Muslims in Scandinavia.
Sweden is for Swedes. Kick the Muslims out ASAP.
Oh. Right. Guess I found their legitimate grievance then.
Sieg Heil!
That said, what about the Swedes who are Muslims?
Oops, somebody forgot to tell the Finns that. There are tens of thousands of ethnically and linguistically Finnish immigrants and descendants of immigrants in Sweden.
Now, I can see an argument for having a different immigration policy for people from a neighbor country with close historical ties to Sweden than for non-Scandinavians from a distant part of the world. But any such argument still contradicts any simplistic “Sweden is for Swedes” slogan.
(And if we’re going to nitpick historical ties, the Iranian-speakers who make up about a quarter of Muslim immigrants to Sweden are actually linguistically closer to Swedes than Finnish-speakers are. Try that on your pianola.)
You can talk semantics all you like but they are called ghettos because a very large percentage of the people living there have a non-Swedish background – 80% or something for Husby – and because there are massive problems with unemployment, etc., and that is the way “ghetto” is defined around here.
Incidentally it is now reported that the guy who was shot by the police was a Portuguese immigrant married to a Finnish woman, that were both constantly harassed by the very same “youths” that are now rioting, and the reason he used a machete on the police was that he though they were “youths.” Pretty ironic all around.
I might be under mental impact of growing up in poor & screwed up left-and-right Eastern European country ruled over centuries by foreign powers or local street-smart gang-types who at one point or another spent time in jail and who never had any basis or a chance to build a decent civic society.
Thus, when I read the history of Canada and its political and civic life, I see somewhat of a marked storyline that I can sum up with this – Canada is – by far - the best result of British-style democracy building and government system that Brits tried in many parts of the World. Maybe because it’s big, maybe because it’s empty, maybe because they don’t care but guys like Pearson don’t come out of nowhere – they come from a generation of people interested in “peace, order and good government” and his presence in international affairs – no matter how naïve it may looked – is just a tip of the iceberg of Canadian political and civic tradition.
I cannot name a single issue in last 200 years that I can point at – perhaps with exception of a threat of Quebec independence – that brings the constant heat in political circles, among observes and media with frenzy similar to that of US when it comes to guns, 1st amendment, Fox News, health care. And, so we come to question of immigration which – in my opinion - is just one of those societal issues that are discussed in a matter-of-fact tone with little or no rhetoric with ideas and proposals that come from the core of what & who the people are. Not really from this deep individual understanding of mechanics of economy and perceived benefit from it.
For example, Mexican migrant workers come all the way north to work on farms - their general conditions and pay notwithstanding - they all have standard health-care that nobody would ever dispute, not even as a joke.
My experience is such that I would not speak of “tolerance” with its connotation of having one side doing toleration of another perceived to be a disturbance – in Canada, mostly, I sense the maturity of a community that has settled some perennial questions and can afford to worry about hockey referee call as if their life depends on it.
They must have an awful time fitting in
I hate to say something that a bunch of racists will agree with, but I have no idea why Sweden decided it was a good idea to take in lots of immigrants from Muslim countries. The cultures are about as far apart as one can imagine.
One of two things is going to happen: the immigrants are going to keep their culture of denying women equal rights and status and put themselves in conflict with Swedish society.
Or, the second generation immigrants are going to adopt western ways and put themselves in conflict with their parents and older relatives.
It’s one thing to have someone apply for residency who says that they have always admired Sweden for its secular traditions and equality of opportunity and would like to live their as a Swede. It’s another for someone to say my own country sucks so much I’l willing to live with you infidels as long as I can force my women to wear scarves and beat the shit out of them if they dare to defy me.
I have to admit this is more or less where my mind went. For years I heard from Europeans how horribly racist American society was, as witnessed by…well, by the kind of things that have happened in recent years in Sweden, France, the UK, and other places. I wonder if I’d hear as many comments these days. True societal integration is often a slow, tough process.
The Imam with his four child wives could live peacefully with the happily married gay couple next door if society would just stop being so racist and hand out more welfare. Also, open the borders especially to Muslims who have no skills and don’t speak the language because that will solve the problem, too.
Racist claptrap.
I’m reminded of the Muslim idiots I meet who insist that Americans should stop forcing women to dress like whores and murder their wives and girlfriends in such large numbers and that Islam would do an immense amount of good because women in Muslim countries aren’t forced to dress like whores and domestic murders in Islamic countries are vastly lower.
I really wish the western chauvinists and the Islamic chauvinists would get together sometime, compare notes and realize just how similar they are.
Honestly, the only real difference is their skin tone. Everything else is just flip sides of the same coin.
Really? Suggesting that a country with a secular tradition is not a good fit for your typical Muslim immigrant is the “flip side” of Muslims “who insist that Americans should stop forcing women to dress like whores and murder their wives and girlfriends . . .”
Western culture and Islamic culture are nothing alike. In fact, I believe they are irreconcilable.
Considering that Islamic culture is just as much part of western culture as the other Abrahamic faiths that’s an extremely stupid comment.
And yes, claiming “why don’t those Muslims fit in to our superior culture” is just as moronic as Muslims proclaiming “why do those Americans murder their wives and girlfriends in such ridiculously high numbers and why do they make them dress like whores.”
Moreover, there are few western countries that are “secular”. The only people who think they are, are Americans who think all western countries are like the US or westerners who are so used to their countries rules they fail to see who non-secular they are.
I wish most countries had separation of Church and state, but the US, France, and Turkey are the exceptions not the rule.
Sieg Heil!

Sarcasm.
I ment where did you get that there are Imams with multiple child brides wishing to live in Sweden. Also are you against gay marriage?
