Wow. How often do such serious complications arise from pneumonia nowadays? I know he had a respiratory disease so perhaps it contributed to this? Sad day indeed, and way too young of an age to pass.
Yes, Bernie was way too young to leave us. How sad for his family.
To answer about how often it happens, unfortunately more people are dying from infections these days that used to be considered non-life threatening. All of us who have grown up in the age of antibiotics have a hard time comprehending a death from influenza, pneumonia, or an infected cut, but it used to happen all the time, and scary as it sounds, it will be happening again. The organisms are mutating and resisting the antibiotics, so we all have to be more and more careful than we ever had to be for the last 30 years. There are cases where the doctor is pretty much powerless over the organism, just as physicians were 100 years ago.
Yeah, he had sarcoidosis, a disease that can often damage the lungs (and other organs). I would expect that was a big factor in why he became so ill. It’s definitely very sad for someone that young to die.
It’s still sinking in. And two of the last episodes of his show have taken on an additional meaning. First of all, the series finale centered around Bernie having a near-death experience and imagining how Them Kids would turn out without his influence.
Second, there was an episode where Jordan skipped his friend’s bar mitzvah so he could attend a different bar mitzvah which had fancier gift bags. He was managing to keep his conscience at bay until the rabbi started talking about the day of judgment, and Bernie’s big mean face was suddenly superimposed over the rabbi’s face. "And the lord will say, "WHO YOU WIT’?!"
Damn… I knew he was in hospital, but I thought he was on the mend… In fact, I thought I read on the IMDB frontpage that he was being released (and no, I’m not thinking of Morgan Freeman).
So, so sad.
He was basically just a cameo in TRANSFORMERS and yet was probably my favorite part of the movie. (“Yeah, sometimes the car chooses an owner with a cheap-ass father.”)
That’s too bad. He always played the same character but I enjoyed that character. He was a regular to sing the 7th Inning stretch at Cubs games and was generally one of those high profile “Chicago Guys”. It’s too bad that the last time he made news was when he told those inappropriate jokes at an Obama event, it might be all some people knew of him and be mentioned in many of the news stories reporting this.
Bernie will be greatly missed. He stole the show in “The Original Kings of Comedy” and “The Bernie Mac Show” was really funny and clever, especially with Bernie breaking the 4th wall and with the on screen written sarcastic narrative commentary.
