RIP Cleve Duncan (Earth Angel)

The lead singer for the one-hit wonder The Penguins has died. If there was ever an iconic belly-rubbing song for school dances of the 50s, this was it.

I know the song well, of course, but… “belly-rubbing”? Is that some sort of '50s euphemism for a hand job, or… ?

No, just dancing up close with your sweetie.

Ohhh. Because your bellies are rubbing against each other.
I feel so dirty now.

Like most of the groups back then, they actually did a number of good songs all but forgotten. But Memories of El Monte deserves a mention, as it was often played on oldies stations before ‘oldies’ came to mean ‘from the seventies up’. Interestingly, Frank Zappa wrote the song. I remember who the lead singer of the Penguins was because he names himself in the song.

They also did a pretty decent cover of Hey Senorita.

The Back to the Future song when Marty gets the past fixed.

Most appropriate poster name for any thread ever.
