RIP Danny Federici

Danny Federici of the E Street Band died today from melanoma.

For those who don’t know, he was the organist/accordionist/keyboardist for the E Street Band (with either David Sancious or, since their third album, Roy Bittan, serving as the pianist).

Great player, solid rock musician; he’s been playing with Springsteen for 40 years.

It’s kind of funny whenever someone in Rock and Roll dies a relatively early death who wasn’t known as a hard liver. No drugs, no booze, just run of the mill cancer at 58.

Ah well.

Glad I got to see the E Street Band in all their glory in 2000.

Damn, that really sucks. Danny was a key part of the E Street Band’s sound. He is going to be missed.

I believe that’s his glockenspiel-ing that can be heard so prominently in Born To Run. Great musician.

RIP Danny.

Damn, that’s too bad. I’m going to the Springsteen show here in Charlotte a week from Sunday. He’ll be missed.

Solid player. Quality rock keyboards. He’ll be missed.

Ah, shit. Springsteen spoke about him briefly on March 31st in Vancouver. Ah, crap. They’re on tour now, which stinks for the E Streeters. It must be rough on them right now. Ah… shit.

IMO, Danny did the most among Bruce’s musicians to bring the Jersey Shore to life. When he played, it sounded like Saturday night at a carnival, especially on songs such as Hungry Heart, Tougher Than the Rest, and 4th of July.

Lawrence Welk is considered uncool by many, but his show inspired Danny to learn the accordion and to become a musician. And a-one. And a-two.

dammit…
