RIP Dawn 'Mary Ann' Wells

Be careful making pronouncemnts. We still have 22 hours and 42 minutes to go.

Remember 1985? Rick Nelson?

Yes, Tina Louise is now age 86.

Rest in Peace, Dawn Wells. I was in your camp, not Ginger’s.

Here are the rest of the castaways, listed by when they passed away (hey, rhyme!):

2020-12-30 (aged 82) Dawn Wells, b. 1938-10-18
2014-01-16 (aged 89) Russell Johnson, b. 1924-11-10
2005-09-02 (aged 70) Bob Denver, b. 1935-01-09
1991-04-10 (aged 90) Natalie Schafer, b. 1900-11-05
1990-01-02 (aged 68) Alan Hale Jr., b. 1921-03-08
1989-07-03 (aged 76) Jim Backus, b. 1913-02-25

Wow. The Skipper and Gilligan weren’t all that old when they died. Were falling coconuts involved?

What, too soon?

Well, shit.

At least now we have a definitive answer for the thread about who the most famous person to die from COVID is.

Shit.

RIP

No more coconut cream pie; crap!

Rest in peace, Dawn.

I was always a Mary Ann kind of guy, never saw the real appeal of Ginger.

In memoriam:

I got into Gilligan’s Island through reruns on TBS, after school – me being a member of the first generation of Latchkey Kids.

I looked forward to the half-hour chunks of time I spent on the island with my friends Gilligan, Ginger, Mary Anne, etc., in the same way that I looked forward to spending time with my friends Raj, Leonard, Sheldon, etc. four decades later.

Our old buddy cancer. Bob Denver was a heavy smoker much of his life and died of throat cancer, Alan Hale was unlucky enough to develop thymus cancer.

I put this in the “Famous COVID victim” thread earlier today:

She garnered several comments by others there too.

Maybe I am dreaming this, but didn’t Dawn Wells get busted 20 years back by getting caught trying to send a few fresh, fattie ounces of the Kind Stuff to Bob Denver (“Gilligan”) in the mail?

(Also, who the heck puts thier real name and info on a package of fresh illegal dope they send to an old friend in the mail?)

What else would you expect from an ingenue like Mary Ann?

In that case (in 1998), it looks like Denver initially said that he’d received the package from Wells, but apparently refused to testify to it when it went to court.

Then, in 2007, Wells was pulled over for driving erratically; police reported the smell of marijuana in her car, and found four smoked joints. She claimed that they were from hitchhikers that she’d picked up, and served five days in jail.

Damn, my kind of girl. More reason to like and miss her IMHO.

There’s a book on GI that I’d love to order, if I can find it. Back in the '90s, a friend had a copy and told me some of the backstage stories related to the show.

Bob Denver’s use of pot on the set was apparently legendary, as were the sounds that came from Tina Louise’s trailer/dressing room whenever her boyfriend dropped by. Also, Jim Backus was the only member of the cast allowed to improvise his dialogue.

When you find that book, get me a copy!

After tonight’s episode of GI on CHCH, there was a little tribute to Dawn like the ones on each night now for Alex Trebek. I thought that was a lovely touch on the station’s part.

She aged really, really well.

RIP, Dawn. I loved Gilligan’s Island when I was a kid.

So does she win the million dollars?

(Sorry. I’ve a morbid sense of humour.)

Maybe they set up a tontine. Poor Ginger, wandering around the island alone swigging from the one bottle of rum they stashed 55 years ago.
