RIP Edwin Newman

Newsman and language aficionado Edwin Newman has died at the age of 91.

The pressure on anyone writing his obituary will be enormous.

Considering the current crop of [del]journalists[/del] glam fam talking head bimbos, it will probably come from an “elder” such as Tom Brokaw.

Holy cow, I hadn’t even realized he was still alive.

Oddly enough, he actually died over a month ago, but because his family wanted time to grieve privately, the death wasn’t announced until yesterday.

As Jerry Seinfeld often said, “Goodbye, Newman!”

I loved his books on language, and his appearance on Saturday Night Live, playing a suicide hotline volunteer who kept correcting the caller’s grammar, was a priceless piece of self-mockery.

One of the vanishing breed of reliable newspeople. Whatever was ever said about Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite as being trustworthy and accurate was true in spades for Newman.

Who’s left from that group?

You’re referring, of course, to his anchoring the Weekly World News TV show.

No disrespect intended, but am I the only one who thought he died years ago?

He was a great host on SNL. He did a MY FAIR LADY sketch in which he bet Tom Snyder (Akroyd?) that he could convert the bartender into a news anchor and another in which he manned a crisis line but kept correcting the woman’s word usage.
